Order of effects

Just curious, I got a question for people, what is the traditional order of processing effects in an insert chain.

Im working on a mix at the moment and I noticed I have done it quite a few ways in the past. Im sure there is an optimum routing like

EQ
Compressor

etc.

Hmm I would think you could reverse those two?

If the sound need eq to clean up before compressing or put the eq after the compressor for that final mix. Dunno...

    Whatever sounds best.

I think generally you put the compression on first and a limiter on last, then whatever works in between like a sandwich.

That's how I would do it if I could be organised enough to!

Generally, I just add until I get the right sound! It's totally random mostly for the order

I must admit I am not a fan of limiters, I used them in the past and later on found that they actually did little to help the sound. Went back and remixed a few tracks dropping the limiter and found that they were much better without.

My motto is suck it and see. If it sounds ok then use it. I've never worried about authodoxy too much.
