Original - Help Me

This is a blues song I wrote and re-worked to be a bit more rocking. Let me know what you think. Looking for Mix input - Song Structure input - Overall Quality. What you like, what you don't like. Oh by the way here is the song http://soundcloud.com/mtg-recording-studio/help-me

NICE TUNE! Well written. IMO, the Vox could come up more. The bass is overpowering the mix a bit too. EQing the guitars will help clarity overall sound. Great song! Thanks for posting it!

Thanks Bill for your input, I had a feeling those things needed some work. Especially the bass, I think it's a combination of the kick and bass guitar not gelling with each other. As far as guitar EQ, any suggestions of what needs more or less. Mid-range, warmth, high end?

I think this song rocks.  I don't hear the bass issue on my system.  I think it's well balanced, and has a live feel.  The vocal levels were about right to my ears.  I guess it all depends on how you listen.  If it turns out that you decide to tweek the mix, you don't have far to go.  Listen to the mix on as many systems as you can, and step out of the room and listen away from your monitors.  You're on the right track.

    All the best,

I notice the same thing that Lynn brought up.  It's different on each system you use for playback. The song rocks! Try some presets and experiment. Let you ear be the final guide and remember to have fun!

Cool, I'll try listing to it on a couple other speaker set ups. I did some minor tweaks in the 150k range (dropped it .5 db)and 500k range (spiked it .5 db). Nothing too noticeable but it did sound a bit better. Thanks for your input and your comments

It sounds balanced on my system as well. Maybe just a few dynamic tweaks. You could try the background instruments slightly lower at the start and then build a little more throughout the arrangement. I don't know if this would hurt that great rockin' feeling you have going. Terrific job!

I mostly removed unnecessary tracks which fixed the dynamics it was lacking. I seem to forget about dynamics when I'm playing and tracking all the music, it's easier when you're in a band because band mates can help carry the load. It also allows you to focus on making your part sound great. When you're recording all your tracks, you all most have to have multiple personalities. Singer, guitars, basses, drummer, then producing, tracking, mixing and mastering. That's 8 different split personalities in each song, all of them equally as important as the other and all of them fighting for their spot light. I'm a bass player at heart, been playing for over 20yrs, but in this song I had to remove bass parts that were clouding up the song. The producer side of me won that battle, while the bass player side of me stormed out of the studio and slammed the door on his way out. The other 7 personalities laughed and talked behind his back while giving the producer a high five. OK I'm technically losing it. Oh did I mention I added a keyboard sound effect in there, don't know where that guy came from. I think he was lost and wondered into the studio. It was most def after the bass player walked out.

Awesome rock performances and lyrics (for my soul)!!!

The following is just my personal dribble:

this has a vintage feel ... which you may have aimed at (except for the overheads)

Mix sounds like it needs some widening (by today's paradigms) ... not just the overhead drums.

Some vocal and guitar transients sound a bit squashed or something, thus losing some of their bite.  Perhaps, I'd back off the attack parameter on their compressors by a 10+ milliseconds (or such) to allow more energy peaks.

Also vocals and guitars beg some tape saturation and EQ tricks, to bring their dominance forward.

    Message is totally awesome!!!

Ok, final mix. Need to move on if I'm going to record 12 songs in 12 months. http://soundcloud.com/mtg-recording-studio/help-me I'm now starting to work on a song for February. I got the bass and drum program tracked

I think you're at that point where you need to step away from this song.  My previous comments still apply, this is a good production.  Carry on.

I also thought that some EQ tweaking between bass and guitars could bring the parts out better. After listening to your second post it sounds like you really got things to sound better. I thought that song needed minimal work though, even the first one.
The song does rock, you have a great voice for this type of work. More than just an empty rock tune, I also like the message of this song.

This is really a great effort.  I hear what everyone is saying about the mix.  I don't think it's the mix but the production.  All the guitar work is in the lower registers.  I would put another guitar in with some counterpoint or different chord positions in the higher registers for some more dynamics.  It would also be good to have some lead licks accentuating some points throughout the song.  A nice lead break would be good too.
