Original Rock

Just finished this original song of mine. I just bought Sonar X1 Producer and joined this forum a few days back. This song was recorded though with Fl Studio 10 because it was a work in progress. My next original will be done with X1 Producer. Would appreciate any comments you might have to offer about the song. Thanks.

    Hi,

Hey, this is a cool song. Man, you've got a real good voice.

The mix/production sounds great on my speakers. Lots of cool guitar tones.

Great harmony and vocal arranging. Very nice.

    Hi,

Welcome to the forum.  This is a great song with a very cool vintage vibe and modern production style!

Excellent vocals and harmonies, great instrumental performances, and the mix has a really nice touch of a "live" feel to it.  The acapella harmony ending was also a nice touch.

    Very nice work!

The music reminds me a bit of Queen.  Ambitious writing.  The bass end of the mix needs some attention.

    I enjoyed it a lot.

jsaras, I had purposely left out the bass on a few verses thinking I was building dynamics. But had questions about it. You are the only one that has said anything about it. So I listened again and changed it. If you get a chance give it another listen and see if that solves the problems you mentioned. Thanks for your nice comments.

The Queen bit (harmony) happened by accident. I was moving harmony clips around and got one piece in the wrong location and after listening (lightbulb)! I learn more stuff by mistakes than anything.

    Hey there Chas, welcome aboard

Great stuff indeed, you've succeeded in bringing a lot of elements together to form a coherent tune that works really well.

Your voice reminds me a lot of David Byrne, especially in the "Best of Times, Worst of Times" parts (and I like the Tale of Two Cities reference), and that thick tone on the distorted guitar is to die for - very nice!

    Haaaa, nice song
i agree with jsaras the bass area needs some attention...

also.. you used electro drums and like a live kit...
but the electro drums are mix wise ok
but the acoustic kit.. is dull and in the back..
you need to work on the "real kit" to match level and tone to the electro drums
mix wise talking , so the drums , elec and real.. sound like they where from the same song

    nice 70's vibe song!!
    i Like

Steve, thanks a lot for nice comments. Glad you liked the song. I recently bought Guitar Rig 4 and used that for the guitar.

rolo95, I addressed the bass issue in a post above. It should be resolved now. As far as the drum issue I will look into this. Thanks for listening and for your comments.

The  song chugs along well - I like the retro feel mixed with modern. I also got a hint of Queen.
I can hear a bit of Roger Daltrey vocals and it reminds me of the psychedelic rock ensemble Spirit with touches of "Twelve Dreams of Doctor Sardonicus" circa 1970 - when I was doing things I didn't oughta

I enjoyed this very much, and look forward to hearing more from you.  Well done!

Welcome. This is a great tune. Your use of minimizing the Bass is a technique I recall used by Queen on a couple of their tunes and it does seem to work. You did a nice job building up the dynamics. When it kicks in, it kicks in. Vocals are really fine! Playing and Production are wonderful.

Ireno, Philz, Tap and Mesh, thanks for listening and for your comments. There seems to be a lot more guitar and rock players on this forum. Been hanging out at the FL Studio forum and they are definitely more electronica related. This is a welcome change but I'll still hang out there, too. I've learned a lot from them as I'm sure I'll learn from all you guys. Thanks again.

Wow Chas, this is a real melting pot of styles and influences, but it works for me! I like the arrangement a lot, great use of dynamics. I'll throw another comparison into the hat - Be Bop Deluxe.

Really good stuff, I could stand hearing more like this

    Hey Chas
EXCELLENT tune! Love your lead vocal delivery. I also hear the ROGER DALTREY lead and QUEEN harmonies. I like the chunky guitar tones and the mix of the acoustic kit with the hit of the electronic snare (I guess thats what I'm hearing) really works for me. The structure and flow of this tune are really cool. Reminds me a bit of "STUCK IN THE MIDDLE WITH YOU" Stealers Wheel. My only nit is the electric guitar needs to come forward in the mix just a touch more. All in all you have a KILLER tune/mix/performance. I look forward to hearing more of your music. KUDOS!

Jamesg, kev and BIABDude, thanks for listening and for your great comments.

Be Bop Deluxe is a new one for me.

The snare is actually 2 snares EQed a whole lot. Had a hard time getting the sound I wanted and am still not satisfied but I said it's time to let go. Kick is 2 kicks as well. Started using EZ Drummer but hated the single snare and kick (sounded too plastic) so this is what transpired. Will look at he lead guitar's volume. Thanks.

Great Tune!  Nice production - great vocals - lead and harmonies.  I like you guitar tones.  Excellent playing.  Lot's of elements - 70's rock, queen, a little Zappa-ish.

Cool Freaking tune man!  Great arrangement, I love that it's got a retro vibe yet uses some distortion tones that bands like queen never really hit on much.    It's gone some changes that you really don't see coming but the all work well!   Nice mix.
