Original - Yucatan Rose (old time jazzy) - thoughts on mix?

Hi,
Here's an original sung by my band mate.  We're shooting for the old vinyl, jazz sound.  Wanted to have the swirling horns thing, but not sure if they step on the vocals too much.  The instruments are all mixed in mono. Anyhow, feedback on mix/arrangement appreciated.  We've never done this type of genre.  PS, I know the vinyl crackling is a bit gimmicky, we're OK with that :)

I think the song and arrangement is excellent, got that New Orleans sound. As far as the mix goes, it's hard to make a comment because of the over-riding 'vinyl' effect, but having said that, I can hear the vocals, squeeze box, drums, banjo and horns clearly.

I'd like to hear the song in stereo, without that effect

This is only my opinion.  I think maybe make this sound old but not make it sound like it is being played on old equipment.  I want hear all that cool instrumentation you have going on there because you obviously have some real players on this.

Very cool, great song and great playing etc but this either needs to be mastered or drop the vinyl after 1 verse - the effect gets old pretty quickly

Thanks folks.  I'm going to tame the scratchy vinyl effect, and try a stereo cut.  I appreciate the feedback!

I'd also vote for the first verse scratchy, then bust it out in glorious stereo. The tune is nicely arranged, performed, sung. Feel free to pan the trombone? and the clarinet? away from each other!

It does fit the genre really well, I enjoyed the old timey throwback.

    cheers,-Tom
