Orphaned Envelopes...EVERYWHERE!

Howdy!

I'm having a bit of a frustrating thing happen.

At least once a day, I'll "lose" automation envelopes on a track - usually a soft-synth instrument track. Here's what I mean by lose:

I can still see the envelope, but it's turned black. I shift-click on it with the smart tool, and instead of activating THAT envelope, it creates a new envelope (usually a track-length "jump" at 50%) and marks it "orphaned."

Going through the Edit Filter dropdown doesn't work. It doesn't show that any envelopes exist.

As far as I can tell, there is absolutely no way to interact with this "ghost" envelope. It's forgotten what it's supposed to be controlling, but there's no way to remind it. I can't even delete it, since trying to select it always results in a new orphaned envelope.

At the moment, my only fix has been to recreate the envelope, tracing the previous one and leaving it at that. That's extremely annoying, especially on tracks with a lot of automation.

I haven't found a reliable way to recreate this. It just happens. I've only noticed it when opening a file - I haven't seen a clear example of it happening while a file was being worked on.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas? Thanks!

Yes! I to have this problem, unfortunately I haven’t come up with a solution yet, other than hoping X2 sorts out this whole “Ghosted Envelope” fiasco!

Are you using the Edit Filter to access an envelope? If you are trying to edit an envelope the same you did in 8 you will have a hard time. Ues the Edit Filter to select which envelope you want to edit. All the others will stay ghosted. This is intended.

As I mentioned, Edit Filter doesn't work. It doesn't show any existing envelopes available for editing.

I'm familiar with how envelopes work in Sonar X1 - I'm not new to it.

In 8.5, I just right-click on the envelope and re-assign it. Can you no longer do that in X1?

    Bit,

Yeah, that still works in X1 (although it's a shift-click and then a right-click), but not for these little stinkers.

They're literally unreachable, at least as far as I've been able to determine.

Could show a screen shot of the orphaned envelops.

Is this happening on all projects or just a specific one?

If it's specific to one project, it could well be corrupted and the only solution will be to recreate from scratch, which can be a major pain!

What if you open project in 8.5 and try to activate those orphaned envelopes?

Bristol, It definitely isn't every project, but it also isn't just one. It's happened on a few, and as I mentioned earlier, it never seems to happen WHILE I'm working in them. I just open them back up and voila! panup, I did a clean install of everything when I went to X1, so I actually don't have 8.5 on this system. Not a bad idea, though. Thanks for all the suggestions, folks! I've noticed that X1 isn't so great at instrument tracks, so I'm wondering if it isn't something related to that. At any rate, I'll keep poking at it! D

If it's more than one project, it would seem unlikely to be a corrupt project file. If it were, you could save the entire project as a new project and probably cure the problem.

More likely, it's a particular synth that's not initializing when you open the project. SONAR thinks it's not there anymore and the envelopes' links to it are no longer valid. Hence the orphaned envelopes. Maybe you're using a demo version of some synth, or one that's not installed properly?

Orphaned envelopes can be deleted by opening the project in 8.5.3

Since you don't have 8.5 on that system you can still delete any in X1.

    bit,

That's actually something I didn't consider (un-initialized synths.) I'll keep that in mind and see what I can find next time it happens.

Thanks again for all the help, everyone!

I think I had something similar happening to me recently. In my situation, I had an effect plugin with automation that I decided I didn't need. When I deleted the plugin from the effects bin, the envelope stuck around and I had behavior similar to what you're describing (though it's been awhile and I can't recall if it was exactly the same issue). Fortunately, it was just the one envelope, so I was able to recall which plugin I used: re-inserting and enabling the plugin let me have access to the envelope normally again, so I deleted it and then got rid of the effect and the problem was gone. Hope that helps you a little bit.

OLD THREAD, but I have the same problem (x1).  The synth is not deleted or invalid (FM8), it plays fine.  The behavior is EXACTLY as the original poster described.  The envelopes do not show up in the envelope assign list (they are there, but no colored dot by them, when I click on them, a new envelope is created.  Right clicking does not work, shift clicking does not work.  They are, as the original poster suggested, unreachable.  Has this been fixed in x2 or x3?

i have the same problema and is not fixed in the X3d update.
    I have a temporal solution:
Select the track where you have the orphaned envelope.
Go to view menu and select the Event List, there you can see details of the orphan envelope and remove it.

    Sorry for my english.

In the "read me" for X3d, in the section on Backwards Compatibility there's mention of a problem with disappearing envelopes when opening an X-series project in a pre-X-series version. I was going to suggest opening in the version that created the file, selecting "show all envelopes," re-saving under a different name, and seeing what happened...

"View event list" doesn't work for me:  all I see are note events, no envelope events.
If I clone the track, the orphaned envelopes disappear, but the single-track synth gets split into two tracks.  When I try to pack it into one track, I get an error message that "instrument tracks must be sent to a single output" (or something like that).
I just solved the problem by creating a new instrument track and copying the data from the bad track to the new one. Then delete the old track.  The orphaned envelopes did not copy.

Is it fixed in new projects?
Just some random comment -  try creating a bundle file, closing Sonar, opening it, saving it as a project again (worth a go anyway).
If not try creating a new project and copying/pasting everything into it.

    Cheers
