Ouch!

So, I cloned my C drive to one of my SSD drives.  When I plugged in
the SSD to my C Drive slot, got a device error message.  Took the drive
back out, and went to plug the original C drive back in.  No go.  Couldn't
figure out why the data cable wouldn't plug in.  Plugged the SSD back in
and it plugged in fine.  So took it back out and tried again to plug in the
original C Drive.  No go.  Took a look at the cable and the plastic retainer
from the SSD for the data connector was stuck in the SATA cable .  So, fortunately
I had an unused SATA cable, and was able to be back up and running again.
Using a safety pin I was able to get the broken connector out of the cable,
but it wasn't fun....believe me!

Alas, now my Kingston Hyper X SSD is now toast .  Nothing critical on
it, so only lost the drive.  It was about 3 years old anyways so was
due to be pushed to "back service" anyways.  So, be advised to be EXTRA careful
(which I always try to be) when plugging in your drives.  Those connectors
aren't very stout apparently.

Just my fun for the day, so thought I'd share my adventure...

Sharing thoughts on a fun day, not really about software. Sorry about the drive loss.

My summer fun was the discovery last week that my first floor music studio has been sitting in water for ages. Whole south side section of the walls and floor rotted out. Major salvage effort going on. Vintage synths and modules, amps rusted.
The downstairs setup was for a maze of hardware and computer communications I designed 15 years ago. Almost worse than the damage was taking apart all the wiring and wondering if I can ever figure out what was connected to what.

Back to water world.

Well, that certainly makes my bad deal seem a WHOLE LOT better...

Sorry to hear that John!  Hopefully insured!

Unfortunately no insurance that will cover the slow deterioration of probably decades. If it had been a catastrophic one time storm, the fine print of the insurance would allow some coverage. It's only money (a lot).

Sorry to hear/read both of your bummer stories.  Are there any country songs in these disasters?

Country music hit...

There's got to be inspiration in this somewhere.

I recommend an old pickup truck instead of cow piles (patties).  The truck will smell marginally better.

I'm always suspicious of the longevity of a SSD.  I had a Seagate 500GB HD die after about 8 years of service.  That basically cost me $6 a year in use.  AP2496 (2) still in use.  Maybe about $10 a year.  I still have WD Blue 320gb functioning as storage drives.  I guess some have gotten over 3 years of service from SSD but with the higher prices the cost vs. longevity makes me wonder if adding more of them is worth it.  I have Intel with a 5 yr, SanDisk with a 10 yr warranty.
Lucky you didn't ruin the board.

If/when they get the DHL guys sober enough to make it from KY to MO, I'll be going SSD for my system drive in my Win10 box.  I did this with my 8.1 machine and loved the startup and app load speeds.  I doubt I'll go much further than system drives any time soon.  Traditional drives are too cheap these days and are plenty fast for my audio needs.

Gear took a hit on top of extensive structural damage. Mint pristine Juno-60 a casualty among others. Major economic bleed but some things can't be replaced for any cost. Then they are just things. Think I chose the wrong time to retire however, facing an astronomical repair bill ahead..

Thanks for your kind words. Me and the wife were seeing the damage in Texas and wondered what was happening out of sync with us not being parallel battered as well. Our "fate" has always been such that global catastrophies are also dumped in our direction so we get to suffer with the larger family. Cool I guess. Maybe some math dude would say that coincident probabilities are less than on par with winning a lottery but still remotely possible.

Were wondering where our payback share of the water damage was and figured it was being saved for the next storm season for a delayed retribution. We were brought back to normality with the south side of our home and the studio collapsing into the water. Texas crisis resonating in a localized target in Oregon with predictable style. Sounds absurd crazy, but ass kicked once again like always happens.

Allah, can you postpone any major earthquakes in Tibet for awhile until we can get beyond this mess.

So sorry to hear about your loss of the vintage gear John. I have some really nice stuff that I could never replace if that happened to me. Again, so sorry my friend.

Larry, when they went from the parallel ata to the SATA I always wondered how strong and long lasting those connections were. I am very careful when messing with them. They just seem so flimsy. Not like them old molex connections.

Anyone remember how hard it was to put on the AMD socket A sinks?  I damaged a board due to that.  A local system builder stopped building those rigs because of that.   I hate the Intel push pin.

I upgraded my CPU heat sink to a 4 contact Pipe unit.  It was a complete disassemble and rebuild
right down to having to replace the retainers on the Motherboard (Gigabyte 990 FX)
Not fun.  But it's very quiet and has worked beautifully...so there's that...

That's with every 3rd party heatsink. The current stock AMDs easy.

I was referring to the old AMD Thunderbirds and Athlon XPs.

With current 3rd party heatsinks is when I do the most research.  I'm always more concerned with assembly and will it fit in a case. If one doesn't overclock why not stick with a stock cooler.  If they weren't sufficient there would be a lot of RMAs to AMD and Intel.

Larry, hope your issue is solved.
Got the place structural again outside with a bunch of issues yet. Inside a mess but got the water problem nailed down. Looking at many thousands of dollars once the bill hits. Figure it will be smoother sailing in a couple months.
