Our first X1 Project (also a Videosong!)

For the latest recording for our band, I decided to do it entirely in X1, to "pipe clean" the new workflow so-to-speak :)  ... Also we made it a "videosong" -- taking video of all the recordings and splicing them back together in time with the music. Needless to say both these factors made this project an ... interesting one. But we finished it! Hope you enjoy the final product :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BczhVo7MlM (you can listen to the song by itself here http://neverrightnow.bandcamp.com/track/hyper-mobility )

Please feel free to lay your criticism/comments/compliments down on the arrangement/production/recording/mixing/etc. These are all things I'm still trying to learn more about and work on. Thanks!

Oh and it's not shown in the video, but the drum samples I'm triggering are in Session Drummer 3 (an Ocean Way drums kit that came as a free download with Sonar 8.5 I believe...), in case anyone's curious :)

I watched the video. Real nice. I don't think I can critique the mix as my eyeballs were using up all of my available commenting nuerons. Other than to say that, It would seem to be a bit of a problem trying to fit the vocal into such a bed of high mids. They (the strings and such) did seem to have an overpowering effect on the voc frequencies. I think, maybe. I'm just saying, it was hard to concentrate (be part of) the vocal.
    Those drums sure are tiny...

Yeah, I think "fitting together the high mids" is a big learning area for me. I kind of compensated by letting more of the low-mids of the vocal through, but it seems to depend on the speakers you're using whether it works. But thanks for the comment!

(The drum pad I'm using is a reallllly old thing I got when I was a kid, that just happens to be velocity-sensitive, have a MIDI out and still work! So Until I get my real drums set up I decided to give it a shot :) )

It's a damn-beautiful song, and you guys are very talented. The vid was rewarding to watch. Well done.
I'm not qualified to critique the mix etc, but it sounded great to me.

EXCELLENT song! The mix sounds great on my end.  What mic did you use on the acoustic guitar?  KUDOS!

Glad you like it! That mic is a Studio Projects C4 (original, not the MkII) with the cardioid cap. I angle it more to the fretboard for the rhythm part and more to the soundhole for the solo.

    Mix.. for me.. was great...

    Song... Great....

    Individual performances.. great.

Only critique's I have.. are 1. the video, is a bit drab, as far as costume, locations. 2. Even great vocals, sometimes could use some 'treatment' and FX.

    Otherwise.. quite excellent IMO.

Outstanding piece of music and I very much like how the parts combine to create a wonderful mood and flow to the music. My only mix comment is that (at least with my speakers) it seems to be rather one sided. You might try spacing (panning) each part to give a wider mix which I am sure will help to deal with some of the conflicts going on between the frequencies.

    Best Regards
    Malcolm

    Nice feel to this song.

I think the piano is fighting for space with the vocals.
