Output monitoring help

I'm looking to buy a device for making headphone monitoring easier. At the moment I've got a small cheap mixer that I use mainly as an adaptor for plugging my guitar into the PC. (my soundcard has only RSA jacks), so whenever I need to use a mic I have to unplug a speaker output and put my headphone in there. Gets a bit laborious at times.

Is there a device that I can plug into my output side between my soundcard outputs and speakers, so I can plug headphones in there, and select whether to route the output signal to my speakers or headphones?

Rob... how many outputs does your soundcard have? My Saffire has 8 outputs...so I route outputs 1&2 to my Mackie reference monitors, and I route outputs 3&4 to my stereo system's 'B' inputs and have my headphones plugged into the stereo.

It works very well. When I am recording keyboards & guitars I have the option to use either the monitors or the phones. When the girls are in bed I shut off the monitors & use phones.....same deal for recording my vocals....kill the studio monitors and use phones.

    Mixing ... use the monitors.

Since all the Saffire outputs are getting the same stereo signal...that's the easiest way for me.

EDIT: if you do not have multiple outputs.... electronic stores sell A/B switches that let you switch the output from one device (soundcard) to 2 different destinations.

the 2496 only has 2 outputs, so that wouldn't work for him.

Rob - which mixer do you have? does it not have a headphone output?

Nah Beag it's a small Soundlab mixer. There's an A and B output, and each output has 4 channels. I use it just as an adpator really to save plugging/unplugging everything into the RCA jacks on the soundcard.

Here's a pic and a bit of info, cheers.

Ok - my best advice would be to get you a "real" mixer like the Behringer Xenyx 802. they're only about $60USD and hook it up like RobertB has in this photo:

Thanks Beag I've just ordered one online, that's a great help that pic!

I was reading that post you linked me to for the mixer, and one of Gamblerschoice's postings was so funny.....and I quote:

"It is not possible to have too much wires, or an un-needed piece of equipment. Even if it isn't doing anything at all, it should be laying on the floor or on a table with wires going in and out of it. In fact, any extra wires or cables you might have in a box under the desk should be pulled out and laying across the floor somewhere. It serves two purposes, it impresses un-knowing potential customers, and keeps the wife from messing with things"

Couldn't stop laughing when I read that.

Back in the days when a tascam 4-channel cassete recorder was state of the art tech, I had that, some amps, guitars in stands, foot switches, keyboard on a stand, mics in stands, covers and cases, and wires....lots of wires, all over the one side of our rather large bedroom. My ex-wife would try to come in once a week, she obsessed with this once a week thing, to clean, and dust, and run the vacuum, and complain about the beer cans. She felt that there was no reason for me to leave everything plugged in, and for all of the wires to be every where unless I was in the actual process of recording something. Never mind the idea it might take an hour or more to set up, and then as much time to tear it all apart, just get these wires cleaned up.

The important part of that paragraph...EX-wife.

The A/B switch was to low tech for you?

    Rob,
In your case, you will want to connect your speakers to the CTRL ROOM OUT, in addition to what is shown in the picture.
To listen through headphones only, just turn the speakers off.

Cheers RobertB - I also noticed the EQ adjusters in the mixer too. Are these a good benefit? I've only applied EQ (with very limited success lol) from the PC so far. Will it make things easier that way?

IMO I would not use the EQ on the mixer during recording. use EQ on the tracks FX bin instead. if you record with the EQ on the mixer, you'll record that EQ onto the track and can never change it, if you record the track dry, you can add EQ later and change it as you please.

My new Xenyx 802 has arrived but haven't had a chance to use it yet. Quick question - if I plug in headphones does it automatically reroute the output signal through the phones, or do I need to unplug the monitors from the mixer, or turn them off?
