OverTone DSP FC70 Vintage Fairchild Compressor / Limiter
Has anyone tried the demo of the OverTone DSP FC70 Vintage Fairchild Compressor / Limiter? I'm usually very impressed with their offerings but when I tried this, I was expecting something different. I probably don't know how to use it properly. Anyone out there have any tips on how to use this type of compressor, on what instruments, channel or buss?

The Fairchild is probably used most frequently on Vocals...but can be used in many applications... At $25 I don't know how it would compare to the Waves PuigChild or the IK Vintage 670...

Thanks dlesaux for posting this ... I hadn't heard about this until now. Given that OverTone's Pultec emu is one of my very favorite plugins, I had to download the demo of the FC70 immediately. So far, I'm liking this one a lot. Compared to similar plugins from other vendors, it seems more 3-dimensional and real-sounding. We're talking subtle differences, but to my ears the others sound flat and grainy in comparison. As with any new tool, I'll have to live with this one for a while to make sure I'm not imagining what I think I'm hearing. :-) Anyway, don't let the no-brainer prices for the OverTone plugins throw you ... they are the real deal. Oh, and there's an excellent manual for the FC70 that explains how it's used, for anyone unfamiliar with the Fairchild compressor. Cheers, Eddie

I'd recommend jumping on it for $25. I'd do so myself but I already have IKM's 670 emulation. This compressor was originally designed for vinyl disk cutting, so it's very fast. You can basically use it anywhere you'd use an 1176. It was a standard weapon at Abbey Road during the Beatles' tenure, and they used it on pretty much everything. Listen to the early Beatles ultra-compressed drum overheads. That's the 670. Don't expect it to be your go-to compressor for everything, though. It's just for brute-force smashing. But useful to have in your toolkit.

I probably don't know how to use it properly. Anyone out there have any tips on how to use this type of compressor, on what instruments, channel or buss? You can use the Fairchild 670 on most anything (vocals, bg vocals, guitars, bass, drums, piano, etc), but many times it is used as a bus compressor, on a mix bus or in a mastering role. The hardware version was a beast that had like 20 tubes and various transformers in it. You can checkout some of these videos to get you headed in the right direction. Youtube videos typically default to 360p, you may want to bump up to at least 720pHD and listen on good quality headphones or monitoring system. You may want to hear for yourself how different these two emulations sound ... you may be surprised! That would indeed be interesting. Wouldn't you think, though, that if they sounded too different from one another then one of them's not an accurate emulation? I just assumed IKM nailed it because of how well they did the LA2A and 1176 emulations. One thing about the OverTone version is that they didn't bother with exactly copying the 670's front panel, which is OK with me. When you see "Lat" and "Vert" controls you go: huh?

Depends on which one was used or who's it was modeled after. Each one can vary depending on when & how it was restored.

I'm with you on that! I still can't remember which one is mid and which one is side. Is there a trick to remember..? (There's a word for that - but I can't remember it!) I'm extremely jet-lagged at the moment (just got off the plane a couple hours ago), but I think Vert is Side and Lat is Mid. Refers to the lateral and vertical cuts in the vinyl, in which the up-and-down (vertical) variations carry the Side information and the horizontal (latitudinal) variations carry the Mid/Mono information. It was kind of overkill for IKM to preserve that nomenclature just to make sure you get the picture that's its an accurate emulation. They even gave it a beat-up scratched faceplate.

I'd think the 670 would be a bit of overkill for the master bus, but if it works it works! Try it on a vocal track or a drum bus. I've even used it on a picked acoustic guitar that was too spikey.

Yeah, I tried the UAD Fairchild emulation on the master buss, but usually like the LA2A better before Ozone. Though I think now, I usually just use Nomad's magnetic

When it was on the master, I liked what it was doing to the drums but it was also robbing the entre mix of transients. By putting it on the drum buss only, it tames down the cymbals and tightens up the whole drum mix. I'm also able to get away with a bit more top end on the kick without it sounding overbearing. The whole drum mix sits better now! Thanks again for your great advice! This really transformed my overall mix!

Quick update. I'm now using the FC70 in Lat Vert mode on the drum buss and the results are great! More depth than in linked mode and wider stereo image. This now my go-to compressor for drums..
