Overdub without re-recording orig track

One post says this was answered a million times. Can someone tell me why when I play back an audio track it get re-recorded on the new track. The only way I can record tracks without it recording on a new track is by seperating all of the recordered tracks (right channel) and recording to the left channel. Can someone help?

It is the SoundBlaster Live 24 bit card.

Thanks
