Overwhelmed by X1. Need tutorials???

Jumped from Sonar Producer 3 to X1.  Overhwelmed.  Was helped greatly by SD3 tutorial at CW site. Don't mind spending a few bucks and some time to stop floundering.  The "X1 Explained" tutorial by Eli K. looks interesting for $50.  Also see the 3 volume tutorial that sells for about 100 bucks?  Is it worth it?  I have the X1 users manual and consult it often but it a visual step-by-step might help.  Any advice?

    Hi Larry,

Thanks for asking about the videos. While I of course can't objectively tell you if they will be useful to you, I can tell you that I have had lots of great feedback on both these and the Sonar X1 Tips and Tricks videos. I don't have the X1 Explained video descriptions handy, but here are the descriptions of the Tips and Tricks videos. Maybe you will find them useful.

    Sonar X1 Tips and Tricks

    Video Descriptions
    March, 2011

Track View Tips - Explore ways to work creatively and efficiently with workflow techniques available directly in the Track View Window.

    01. Fun With MIDI Parameters - Explore some ways of using MIDI track transpose, timing, and velocity parameters to generate some funky rhythmic variations of bass or drum parts.

    02. Input Echo and MIDI Layering - Learn how the input echo function is used for layering sounds, and how preset input configurations are created and used for multiple MIDI controllers to trigger multiple instruments independently.

    03. The Arpeggiator - Explore the arpeggiator’s parameters and see how it is used to generate preset patterns and to arpeggiate held chords in a variety of shapes.

    04. Fun With Folders - Explore some ways of using track folders to create and edit composite clips, nested looping, and stutter style edits.

    08. Reverse and Snap Offset - Learn how to create and sync up a reverse cymbal swell using a standard soft synth along with the Bounce To Track, Reverse, and Snap Offset functions.

Time Correction Techniques - Learn some of the various ways note positions, duration, and velocities can be made to conform either to the grid or to other clips.

    09. Groove Quantize - Duration - See how the groove quantize functions are used to conform the note durations of one clip to another.

    10. Groove Quantize - Velocity - Explore the Groove Quantize velocity features, how to save a groove quantize template, and how to create velocity ramps using the Scale Velocity feature.

    11. Fit Improvisation - Learn two ways to have Sonar create a tempo map and conform to freely played performances.

    12. Length And Fit To Time - Explore how these two processes are used to alter either the timing or the tempo of both audio and MIDI clips.

Audio Snap - Learn how to manipulate and edit Audio Snap transient markers across individual as well as multiple clips.

    13. Working With Audio Snap - Learn how to manipulate Audio Snap transient markers manually, and some different ways to apply the timing from one audio track to another.

    25. The Chain Gang - Learn how route the send of a drum track to the side chain input of the Sonitus Gate plug-in, as it is used to chop up a sustained pad based on the rhythm of the drums.

Thanks for the feedback.  There's a whole world of help out there.  I took a tour of all your recommendations and will start with the basics and move to the more advanced and specialized as is progress.  It took a while for my message to post and wasn't sure it had even gone our.  In the meantime I took the risk and bought the groove 3 X1 tutorial.  VERY HELPFUL and logical and clear. Well worth the 40 or 50 bucks.
Again, thanks. Your suggestions will save me some money in the future.

    Eli,
I downloaded your X1Sonar general tutorial.  I can't tell you how helpful it was/is.  Spent 2 hours yesterday on it.  Like a good book I couldn't put down.  You are clear, organized, (rehersed?) and logical in your approach.  I know so little about this stuff and you've made it all undertandable.  Looking forward to finishing this and will amost certainly move on to your other products.  Bottom line: $50 well spent!

I'll do a voice-over for you, in exchange for another copy of that damn book I still can't find.  It might sound more Irish, though, than British.  To the OP,  Scott's book, Sonar Power,  has been pretty helpful to me, til I lost it, if you do well learning from books instead of vids.

Larry, man. I hear ya. X1 is a huge learning curve but so far I am finding it well worth the effort. If it weren't for the endless resources available and this forum I think it would almost be unusable but once you figure it out... holy smokes is it awesome. The included manual is great. The manuals for all the add ons and synths and whatever (available by pressing F1 while the thingy is in focus like I mentioned to you about SD3) are awesome. The Sonar University stuff is awesome. The webinars are awesome (you have watched the webinars right?). The Anderton vids are awesome (they should be in your store account for free download). FBB's vids are awesome. I've heard Mr. Garrigus' Power Book is awesome. The forum is awesome. So yeah... I've been neck deep in educational materials for the past 2 months... most of which are free or were included in my purchase. I can say that after only two months I am now able to perform pretty much all the basic functions I need to to produce my music to completion based on these resources. Just keep your eyes open and make a collection of links and ask questions here. You'll be flying in no time. Peace.

@chuck... Yeah. Those vids are great. They move real quick though but they are extremely thorough. I'd like to see all those skills in text/pic form but pausing and rewinding the vids works too. It seems at the very least the guitar sim tut is in text form over at SOS. Gotta round up all the Anderton articles on Sonar. Just haven't had time.

    I got Eli's 1st Vid, haven't bought the 2nd one yet.  Eli's is excellent.

Went to the Groove3.com site and got that video it's good.  Tried the 5day cheap sale trial at groove 3 and watched ALL sonar related videos, Explained, MIXING... loved them... they are all worth it.

Watched Karl's FBB site... loved it.

    Larry,

As mentioned, there are excellent videos available. I started with Eli's. These helped me grasp the basics. I still refer back to these from time to time.

I then moved on to Craig Anderton's videos also found on CW and Groove 3 sites. These vids get more into specifics.

I've also watched several videos from Karl, aka FastBikerBoy. Great stuff and FREE! (thanks, Karl!)

I'm currently going through(for the second time) Mixing with Sonar X1 by William Edstrom Jr. I'm finding this video also very useful.

Watch the Cakewalk and Groove 3 sites for sales. You can find these videos on sale and save serious money.

    Best of luck!

At the risk of keeping a "dead thread" alive I wanted to report that I finished Eli's 1st tutorial.  FANTASTIC!!!  Moving on to the other recommendations.  Thanks to everyone who contributed.
