Ownhammer New Release

Hi all,

https://www.ownhammer.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=186&products_id=438

Although not software, strictly speaking, I didn't know where else to post this.  My first impression is "Wow!"

To clarify, this is a set of impulse response files for use in your favorite cabinet simulator. Specifically, they are IRs made from vintage Marshall cabinets. And yeh, what Dave said.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

So exactly how would this integrate into a setup? For example, can I use it with either TH3 or Guitar Rig Pro? Love the sound quality.

There are a number of ways that this could be set up, but first you need to disable the cabinet of your amp sim, and this varies by amp sim. For Guitar Rig 5, you can set the Control Room Pro up for “No Cabinet,” or you can just turn it off (Power Switch). For TH3, don't add the matching cab or disable it if it's there.  (EDIT: As pointed out below by vintagevibe, TH3 can indeed load IRs.  Load Cabinet IR and edit its Properties.)

Secondly, you'll need to load some sort of convolver and import the IR file of your choice (and there are a huge number of choices!). Convolvers vary all over the map. Ownhammer has 200 msec and 500 msec IR files, so if you want the longer ones (not sure that's necessary) you'll need a convolver that doesn't cut off the IR early. If you want to play live, you'll want one that has low latency. And so on....

As a special note for users of Samplitude: You can use the Room Simulator included in the DAW to load the IR, but be sure to turn the dry signal all the way down so that all the signal goes through the convolver --- all wet.

Similarly, Reaper has ReaVerb (haven't tried it myself). Here also disable the Dry signal or turn it way down.

Some amp sims (e.g. Revalver 4) allow you to load an arbitrary IR into the cabinet simulation part of the amp sim.

Kazrog's Recabinet 5, itself a cabinet sim with a library of IRs, allows you to load additional arbitrary IRs in addition to loading Recabinet files.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dave Clark

PS to Dave: Thanks for posting the clarification.  I was in "Wow!" mode and not thinking clearly....

I’m not at my computer right now so correct me if I’m wrong. I’m pretty sure that with Guitar Rig 5 and TH3 you don’t need to worry about a convoler. In TH3 you can just load the IR files directly into its cabs. In GR5 you can do it in the Control Room Pro (not the old Control Room).

Hi vintagevibe,

I don't see how to do it in Guitar Rig 5, but you are correct about TH3 --- although a bit tricky.  "Cabinet IR" as cabinet, then right-click and edit its Properties.

Thanks for your correction.

Thanks, everyone!  Might give this a try...gonna also look at TH3, and I am guessing there is a place to load IR's for cabs to replace the cabs offered in TH3 (although they are very good, indeed).

Dave,

Thanks for that info.  I saw those reverbs but didn't know that Reflektor was an IR-based one, never having used it.  In fact, it's been years since I've used Guitar Rig at all.

Dave.

PS to Kamikaze:

Convolution is a mathematical operation that is completely defined by equations, so in theory there is no difference between room and cabinet convolvers.  In practice, however, there are a few differences that do matter.  Room convolvers usually have Dry/Wet knobs whereas cabinet convolvers typically are 100% Wet, so for simulating a cabinet you need to turn Dry all the way down for room convolvers as I previously posted.  There are also usually differences of partition sizes or block sizes, maximum length of IR, etc.  Room convolvers can have longer latencies (time before sound comes out); those that do may not be suitable for live playing.  Room convolvers are much more likely to be usable for cabinet IRs compared to using a cabinet convolver for a room IR because of the maximum length allowed for many cabinet convolvers being so short.
