PC EQ: Why does it crackle and pop everytime I move the freq knob?
PC EQ: Why does it crackle and pop everytime I move the freq knob? Even at the highest buffer settings? does this happen for anyone else?

Have had this happen a few times - I'd call it "breakup" rather than crackling, but I suspect we're talking about the same thing. Seems worst when making a large and rapid frequency change in the eq, especially at lower frequencies. The high and low pass filter sections seem unaffected by the problem (so far), it just affects the main four eq bands. My suspicion/guess is it's a digital processing artifact, or maybe something a bit like filter cutoff stepping (aka "zippering") in some MIDI controlled synths. It doesn't seem to happen consistently though, which is why I haven't filed it as a bug yet.

It could be a graphics card issue. When the mouse shares an IRQ with the graphic card this can happen. It is not endemic to the Quard EQ.

However, not being all that commuter savy. Are you saying I need a new video card? Or can I do some adjustment to the irq to fix this issue. I'll post my commuter specs in a moment.

(isa) 0x00000001 (01) PC/2 keyboard ! (isa) 0x0000000C (12) PS/2 compatable mouse Can I delete these drivers and rescan to install. The ticked automatic settings is greyed as well as the change settings on both however they both say no conflicts. Confused?

So I just took a chance and uninstalled those issues. Then rescanned. Nothing poped up mouse and keyboard still work right now. I'm gonna reboot and try x1d and mess with the EQ. Well see I hope this fixes it. I really want it to and hope for the best with x1.

Changing IRQs is no longer possible with Windows based OS since XP, or not without changing the HAL which you really don't want to be doing. Changes made in the BIOS will be ignored by Windows. Physically moving a card to a different slot may help. You can uninstall just about any device, it should get picked up again by "scanning for hardware changes" or on a reboot. I thought the days of IRQ conflicts were over as windows now (supposedly) handles resource allocation much better but perhaps not as you are finding out. Make sure your drivers are all up to date and if they are it might be worth rolling back to an older driver for your video card. I've certainly got issues with my latest sound interface driver so latest isn't always greatest. I don't see (or should that be hear?) the behaviour you describe BTW.

If I install the latest drivers for my interface and press play, 20 seconds later it might start, then the TV will only scroll when it feels like it, along with a load of other strange behaviour. Luckily for me I only updated the drivers after a system upgrade so I knew it wasn't 'normal' behaviour and that was one of the few updates I'd done. Rolled back a version and all is well. Hopefully you might get lucky too.

guitarmikeh I'll first roll back the drivers , if no fix then Change the card slot. The crackle issue has been one of the problems all along for me with x1. Thus the frustration. Many years back I had a similar issue w/ an ATI card... the latest and greatest drivers were optimized for graphics/gaming benchmark, and the end result for me was a distinct zippering noise when moving windows around. Rolling back the driver to a previous version fixed the "issue". That was almost 10 years ago, but similar types of issues may certainly exist today, depending on your hardware... Does the noise happen in other apps, e.g., moving windows around, opening menus, enabling/disabling aero, etc.? If it's a general IRQ/driver/bus type of issue I'd expect you to be able to produce similar results outside of SONAR.... or at least in other parts of SONAR besides the EQ. You'd probably want to have some music playing in the background via WMP or whatever to be able to actually hear the issue. Your choices are: a.) it's specific to the EQ gui/dsp, b.) it's specific to SONAR on your hardware/drivers, c.) it's a general issue w/ you hardware/driver. I'd rule out "c" first...

I'm not hearing the crackle or breakup...but quite frequently when I try to adjust the EQ in the PC my playback just stops. I can hit play and it will continue playing again but as soon as I try to change any parameter in the EQ it will stop playback again. This doesn't happen every time...but probably 70% of the time.

For what it's worth, on my DAW this intermittent noise when altering an eq frequency control only appeared with X1d. Mouse and video card do not share an IRQ and it is only the eq frequency control that exhibits any problems. Moving mouse/windows around does not cause noise, not do any other graphics operations. The noise goes up in pitch if I raise the frequency. Down if the frequency is lowered - it tracks the frequency control's operation. It sounds very much like an analogue hardware tone control does as you sweep it through frequencies, only split into staccato bursts rather than a smooth sound, like it's being sampled at close time intervals or the audio engine is stuttering on that track only (all other tracks play back perfectly while the noise happens). It's caused the audio engine to drop out a couple of times as well. The symptoms are worse the faster the eq frequency is changed. They are also very intemittent. The issue is one that sits in the "very minor nuisance" category as far as I'm concerned.

Nothing considered a showstopper but something that seems new to X1D, as you point out. I guess we'll all have to see how this plays out and if Cake has an awareness of it internally.

I used to have a 'zippering' noise when moving windows around (intermittently.) I had an nvidia video card that was a few years old - i tried new/old/no drivers etc etc all to no avail. I finally replaced it with a new ATI card and problems were solved. I also had no irq conflicts. You may have a similar card issue. Hard to know though unless you can drop in another one to test!

This could be caused by a processing problem and have nothing to do with your graphics card, when you make a move with your mouse the program respond this takes up resourses on your machine causing pops and dropouts. Try upping your latency and see if that solves it. I notice you said you changed your fans to quiet mode in bios, one thing to consider is that audio production requires your computer to push all of its resources to the limit itwill be generating far more heat than a normal machine.slowing down the fans may be causing your CPU to over heat this will compromise performance.

guitarmikeh PC EQ: Why does it crackle and pop everytime I move the freq knob? Even at the highest buffer settings? does this happen for anyone else? I'm guessing at the de-normal prevention that's put in place to prevent division by zero errors in ALL plug-ins when adjusting controls. The fact is that anything could be causing it to be more noticeable on your particular machine with this specific plug. Often the kind of slight crackling noise due to this is more apparent when adjusting a control on it's first use. I have the odd plugs that exhibit this behaviour on my machine which may not be as apparent on others and vice versa other people report this on some of their plugs that is not apparent on my machine. Mostly it's a slight glitching with the particular problem I'm describing and sometimes I have to reign myself in to put it in the proper perspective as often the problem is far less than my ability to be bothered by it. I've found I can troubleshoot these kind of things ad-infinitum and never get close to a solution. I'm not saying this is definitely the case here but often on an issue such as this I can spend far too long focusing on it and lose sight of how small a deal it is. Trouble is with software is that you can't just give it squirt of contact cleaner. Just food for thought really.

Do you think automating the EQ just to see if it does it then as well as when you use the mouse help narrow down the problem? Anything is possible, and many times trying things leads to discoveries. So yeah, it's worth a shot I suppose.
