PCIe Firewire doesn't work with MOTU?

I bought a MOTU Ultralite Hybrid, it just arrived yesterday.  I wanted to use it with firewire (it also has USB) because I already have several USB peripherals on my DAW (keyboard, printer, external USB drives...).  my motherboard's firewire chipset is VIA, and everyone recommends TI chipsets for soundcards.

so I bought a PCIe firewire card with TI Chipset since I have an empty PCIe slot on my motherboard.  this card supports both 1394A and 1394B.  I put it in and it was recognized and works fine in WinXP Pro (32bit).  but the MOTU doesn't like it.  I get errors from the MOTU when using ASIO and it simply will not work in ASIO mode and in WDM mode it only sees 44100 and 48000 sample rates.  not that I really need anything else, but the Cuemix software wouldn't work with this firewire card either.

I plugged it into a USB port and it works perfectly in ASIO or WDM and cuemix works fine!

the PCIe card I bought was:

anyone have any comments about PCIe firewire cards not working with soundcards?

this card supports both 1394A and 1394B

Did you install the 1394B fixes?  As I recall, with 1394B, XP will default to the ultra low speed for firewire.  See here for more info: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955408/en-us

I can't remember all the rigamarole I went through to get my Motu 828 mkII to work on my Firewire 800 laptop, but it had to do with that. Try those fixes and report back. In the meantime I'll see if I can dig up more details.

tarsier - thanks - but does it matter if I'm only trying to use the 1394A port?

    NEVER buy combo cards
you need a straight firewire 400 card only...

    Siig/ADS/Belkin/Startech are recommended

Thanks Scott!  wish I had asked you BEFORE I bought THIS card!

    so it's not PCIe that's the problem - it's the combo 1394A / 1394B that's the problem, huh?

but does it matter if I'm only trying to use the 1394A port?

Yes. Because once windows sees the 800 port, it switches to 100 speed for all of it.

But sounds like you just need to return the combo card and get a single 400 card.

The printed "manual" is pretty much useless. You might see if there is any setting anywhere to turn off the dual speed function. Or email:

most likely combo cards rarely work.

hoever that does not mean the choosen PCIe slot is not having issues
best to start with a 400 card and go from there.

slarty, thanks, I had already checked the "manual" as it were and it wasn't any help at all.  thanks for the cust service link, but I think I'm going to send it back to newegg.

thanks guys - I decided to send this card back and take the hit ($6.50 restock fee + return postage!).  I'll check into a 400 only card - I just have to decide if I want to try PCIe again or not.  If I go with PCI, then I've got to go ahead and make the commitment to remove my Delta 44 since I only have 3 PCI slots and have cards in all of them.

I give up!  I sent that PCIe/1394A/1394B combo card back to newegg and then I went today and bought a PCI/1394A card at Frys.  I bought an Siig - Scott's recommendation above - and I've read in another thread that SIIG puts their logo on top of the chip but it really is a TI chipset.  well this one isn't.  I installed it and it's a VIA chipset!

and the MOTU doesn't work right with it of course.

I'm just going to run it on USB - it works fine with USB, I just have a LOT of USB peripherals connected and wanted to separate the soundcard from everything else's attack on the bus.

yep!  this was the cheaper one!  it was $28 for PCI.

grr.  if they didn't cover the chip up with their sticker I would have been able to tell!

the PCIe one was $49 for SIIG, but it had the chipset sticker on it as well, so I don't know if it's a TI or not.
