PLEASE HELP!!! Microfone supresses Speakers

Hi there!

Two things:
I have got a new microphone (Rode NT1-A) and with it a suitable USB-Audio-Interface (Steinberg UR22 if it helps any) and have installed all the drivers.

1. when I connect the interface to the computer and the mic to the interface, the mic shows up in Sonar X1 and also in the sound settings in windows, I made sure all the settings in Sonar X1 preferences are right as well, so everything is supposed to work fine BUT i cannot hear A THING.
2. Maybe, i thought, this is because (strangly) when the mic is in use, in the sound settings of windows, i HAVE TO make it the standard device which means that the speakers are (as they need to) shown as an active device but they have no check mark (sorry i cannot upload pictures, wont work...) only the mic does.  WHAT THIS COULD MEAN is that the mic IS WORKING properly indeed BUT their output goes over the speakers which is blocked or just not working.

HOWEVER when inserting an audiotrack in Sonar X1 and choosing input my microfone, it does not show any reaction, neither when recording nor that sound is coming through. (Input and Output controllers on the interface are turned up!).

PLEEEEEEAAASE HELP, if anyone can.
SOOOO desperately hoping for help, thanks guys!

Forget the mic for the moment.  Get the interface working.  It should have nothing to do w/ the microsoft sound settings - that should be for your windows warnings.

Use ASIO if available and in SONAR preferences check the UR22 and uncheck all other drivers - ASIO only can use one interface at a time.  Use a loop or the demo from SONAR to see if you can hear output.  You will most likely have to open up the UR 22 softmixer - I'm not familiar w/ the unit but almost all interfaces have one.  Get output working and then proceed to inputs.  It is all rather confusing and incestuous.  Hardware to HW softmixer to SONAR inputs to SONAR mixer.

Also make sure that "input echo" is turned on for the track that you have inserted the microphone .  "Input echo" is the button on the track to the immediate right of the red record button.

Go to Steinberg and download and install the latest audio drivers for your sound card and windows architecture.

Then start sonar, switch it to WDM driver mode and run the wave profiler.
Then try ASIO and WDM driver modes and different buffer/latency settings to see what driver modes works best for you.

    The end!

I have the same interface.  It worked pretty much right out the box for me.  As someone pointed out, make sure you have "input echo" turned on.  Also make sure the knob on the interface that says "input/daw" is not turned completely to DAW.  or you won't hear any inputs.
