Hmm . . . are we talking high end controllers, or just something that works in Sonar ?
I'm using a Novation Impulse 61 (not exactly high end, but works), and utilizing AZ Controller, software which can be downloaded (and customized) right here from the Sonar Software forum (Sonar utilities, by Sonar users)
It's no mess, no fuss (Thank you Azslow !)

Truthfully, I wish I had purchased Native Instruments Keyboard Controller, since I use Native sampled Instruments a lot in my projects, it's very visual, and intuitive. (I've used it at another studio)

Can you give us more info on the types of projects you do ?

Cakewalk by Bandlab, Cubase, RME Babyface Pro, Intel i7 3770K @3.5Ghz, Asus P8Z77-VPro/Thunderbolt, 32GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce GTX 660 Ti, 250 GB OS SSD, 2TB HDD samples, Win 10 Pro 64 bit, backed up by Macrium Reflect, Novation Impulse 61 Midi Key Controller, Tannoy Active Near Field Monitors, Guitars by Vantage, Gibson, Yamaki and Ovation.

I thought the VS 700 did work in Win 10?  It just doesn't have a signed driver. Have a look here:

Tascam US-2400. It's been very faithful for years. Can't complain.

I'm using a Korg NanoKontrol2, Presonus Faderport and Nektar Impact IX49. No problems with any of them.

Novation Impulse 61. Though I don't really use it for anything aside from the keyboard and the transport controls.

The Avid Artist Series also works with SONAR. I wrote about how to do it in the Cakewalk blog.

With just one exception (Nektar Panorama in advanced mode), any existing device (real or virtual) which can be used as a controller at all can be used with Sonar. The difference is in:
* hardware controls: the type (motor-non motor, sensitive-non sensitive faders; endless encoders - finite knobs; buttons/pads with/without 'released' signal; etc) and quality
* existing Sonar integration: ready to be used out of the box (MCU, VS, Artist, Faderport, Impact, Console 1, several obsolete controllers) or not yet integrated (almost all other). Simple devices (with finite knobs and non motor faders) can be integrated by any user within reasonable time using Generic plug-ins. "Smart" devices are harder to integrate since they require some kind of "programming".

Note that what concrete device can do in Sonar is not device dependent. There is no exclusive "hardware to Sonar" bindings, the functionality is always implemented inside the software (Control Surface Plug-in).

I am home lonely player, so I just need remote transport, basic mixing, track navigation, softsynth/FX preset switching and sometimes specific parameters control when I physically sit away from the computer. And I do this from DP (pedals), MIDI controllers (VS20, MPK, Keystation) or Android Phone, with customized configuration for particular use case.

I am using a Novation Launchpad 61 and an older M-Audio Axiom 25 both working fine with Sonar using the AZ controller including with the Novation the use of voice prompts when switching from standard pad/knob/fader use to In-Control settings to control various parameters such as WAI. also using the transport controls successfully on either if and when required.

Re: POINT BLANK - WHO IS USING WHAT CONTROLLER WITH SPLAT 2017/10/24 11:37:00 (permalink)
When people say "controllers", I tend to think of hardware that only have faders, knobs and buttons to control the various functions like the Behringer X-TOUCH.  I never thought of my MIDI keyboard as a "controller". even though it does have 32 assignable knobs, faders, buttons, and transport controls, along with 88 MIDI keys (which to me, is it's main function....playing notes)

But I see a lot of people are listing their MIDI keyboards as controllers.  So I guess I'll add my M-Audio Oxygen 88 as the controller I use.   I did try and setup the faders, knobs and buttons to work with Sonar, but I never got past being able to assign them globally for all projects.  I just got the faders assigned to work with the various tracks, but when I opened a new project, those assigned faders were no longer assigned.

So put me in the group of people who prefer to use my mouse to adjust everything, instead of hardware.  That's what I'm used to I guess.   I'm sure if I got it set up properly, I'd probably use it all the time..   It's like people who just have one video monitor and are happy with it.  But if you have multiple video monitors, you'll never want to go back to just one screen.

Mackie MCU / the old one. Uses midi not usb, no drivers required. Takes 2 minutes to set up and the controllers can be bought for 200 to 300 bucks used. IMO its the best deal for something with motorized faders.

I'm using an Novation SL MkII 49 and just because I like the dedicated transport buttons better (and because I had it anyway) I'm using a Roland / Cakewalk V-Studio 20 with a driver that I hacked so that W10 thinks it's a W10 driver.

Behringer X-Touch - look around for the Cakewalk/Sonar overlay. It all works very well.

Had to ditch my beloved Frontier Tranzport due to old drivers crashing Win10 Pro x64.

Have yet to find an iPad app thats designed for Sonar and not originally made for ProTools or Cubase...

Re: POINT BLANK - WHO IS USING WHAT CONTROLLER WITH SPLAT 2017/10/24 16:30:58 (permalink)
I'm probably a bit of an unusual case here, I think.  I use a combination of the Mackie d8b 24 channel mixing console and a software that converts between MCU midi protocol and the native serial comms for the d8b console (Blu Audio's D8Bridge x32 v1.1) such that the console effectively becomes a Mackie MCU plus 2 XTs for a total of 24 contiguous tracks of control at a time.  I'm not using the console for audio at all, just as a controller.  The arrangement provides 24 channels of meters, faders, pan, mute, solo, select, record enable, etc. plus transport control, jog/shuttle, etc.  I'm still on Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 basically because everything works as it should and I'm not feeling compelled to upgrade the OS anytime soon.  I also use the Frontier Tranzport and a wireless keyboard so there are lots of ways for me to control the DAW from up close or from across the room.

Win7 Pro x64 SP1 / SONAR Platinum x64 (latest) / Mackie d8b + D8Bridge x32 v1.1 = MCU DAW Controller / Frontier TranzPort DAW Controller / Studiocat 3.20 GHz Intel i7 950, 24 GB DDR3 1600 RAM, Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R 2.0 Mainboard, 2TB SATA3 SSD / NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT v341.95 / RME HDSP9652 PCI (ASIO) / RME ADI-8 QS / 24 bit at 44.1 / New Belgium 1554 / My Stuff

Not a controller - but I do like my touch screen.

I have a really sweet little controller from another company, but I have to use the other companies DAW.  I can see where a controller is a good investment.

MCU-PRO and TouchOSC for my iPhone are the primary controllers.  With AZController I can also use my Yamaha Motif 6 classic, but right now I have no need to have that hooked up.  There are lots of options.

CbB latest incarnation, Focusrite Scarlett (2nd generation), WIN10 1809 build,  , MCU pro , Yamaha Motif classic 6 , focusrite ASA one
