POW-R Dithering is missing in Bandlab Sonar

Just noticed.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Yes, it was discussed in another thread . . . they had to lose all the plugins that required contractual payments in the previous Cakewalk (Sonar) software, the new version is missing anything that had a contractual tie . . . like Melodyne Essential, Blue Tubes etc ...POW-R dithering was also a casualty.

Geoff, are you an Ozone user? Its MBIT+ dither algorithm is every bit as good as Pow-R. Or maybe you use Pro-L, Elephant or Waves L2? All offer dither options.
 
Which is assuming plain ol' triangular dither isn't good enough for ya. Before you dismiss it, try it. Listen to it. Listen really, really hard. Make a test track and insert some thick reverb with a long tail. Export it with various dither algorithms and do a blind A/B test, on speakers and on high-quality cans. I've done just that with every dither algorithm I have but I won't spoil the surprise.
 


All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Hey guys, I know there's been a few threads/posts back and forth on this. It was correct that this was something originally not planned to be included in CbB because it wasn't really viable as a 3rd party algorithm.

But I realise this is workflow related and something that doesn't just stick around if you've had a previous version of SONAR. The last thing we want is to have to create another step in the workflow.

Thanks to the unbelievable way people have supported us via the Tip Jar and some ongoing conversations we've had - we've discussed this internally and I'm 90% confident we'll have it all sorted and back in the next update to CbB. Will keep you updated and apologies for the inconvenience in the meantime if it is a feature that is important to you.

The fact you'd even talk about this here shows how seriously you take the users.
I'm not one for whom this is a huge issue, as I'm a composer,
(not a studio engineer who's constantly rendering projects in different formats)
but I had one thought. You previously mentioned about people who have their Cakewalk accounts linked to their Bandlab account with the same email having extra features. Well, all those people have technically paid for POW-R licenses when they purchased Sonar, so you could just enable it for previous Sonar users only,
while newbies downloading it for the first time will not have it in their version, cause they haven't paid for it.
The only problem is technically you have to make two different builds of the DAW, one with it and one without.

I don't know how you plan to figure out this issue which only affects a minority of users,
but I think it's amazing that you care this much!

I think this and the other 3rd party features will likely return, it's just that Bandlab has to have formal agreements with those manufacturers before they can go public, since the current contract is with "Cakewalk Inc." It'sone of those things the lawyers and bean counters have to hammer out first. Remember, it's only been 5 months since the Gibson-induced Cakewalk Coma.

Indeed!!

Win-7 Professionalx64.  CWBL, SONAR X3e, & most other previous versions.  TASCAM US-1800 audio interface.  A bunch of outboard stuff that never gets used anymore (ADAT boat anchors, smoooth LA4 comps (miss them!), etc.)  Way too many instruments.

Thanks, Meng, for the information about the algorithm.  I truly do use it and miss it for rendering down.  I hope you can resolve this in some manner as you have indicated.

I'm not an Ozone user and I realize the dither choice at 24 bit doesn't matter. Still, I like the idea of using the shaped dither just because. :-)
 
I'm not sure this is something that's really important to me. By this I mean, I'm not sure that Bandlab should use their limited resources on dither.
 
To tell the truth, you know what I'd gladly pay for is all the codecs so that the video stuff would work like it used to. The video stuff has no codecs and windows doesn't come with them and so the video functionality is compromised.
 
I don't feel safe downloading some codec pack from bittorrent. I want to just pay for them, but I don't know what to buy.

I hadn't even thought about video codecs, not being a video guy. Which ones are missing?
 
I agree, I'd rather pay for a tested and supported component, whether it's a dither algorithm, a video codec or an audio-stretching algorithm (weren't those licensed from iZotope?).
 
Seems like it would be a simple matter to include such third-party components in the standard executable, but selectively disable them based on a license file. That way, you could pay to unlock those features if they were important to you. Would you pay 5 bucks for Pow-R? Or an MPEG-4 codec? Many of us happily paid for an MP3 encoder back before its patent ran out.

Back with Windows 7, they were included with Windows, I think. When Windows went to a free version, like Sonar removing dither, Windows removed codecs.
 
These are screenshots I took in 2016, but I think they are still relevant. 
 
At the time, I think I was told to go buy some kind of video editor, but I never knew which one and as I really just wanted codecs it was a hard thing to shop for. They don't say 'includes the codecs you want, Switz.' in the adverts.
 
It used to be the videos I would upload could be played back at high def, but now 240 seems the highest they go.

i've never used it's dither.
 
i always have used the dither in Waves L2.

Waves? Their licensing model stinks to hell! So does their shell implementation! I wasted my money buying some of their plugins.

Are CbB files backwards compatible with Splat? If so could you not just save your project in CbB and the open it up in Splat and dither down? Possible workaround until BL can figure how to add it back in.

Yeah...

I'm mixing in CbB and mastering in Splat... no pain.

...but it would add occassional convenience if there was a way to add these dithering algorythms to CbB.
