PROFILE PHOTO QUESTION

Have a quick question , what size does the profile photo have to be before you upload it ? I made my own THE NIGHT FOX profile photo and I can't see what I added in my picture , everything is too small to see or read .

Thanks ! The Night Fox

    Hi James

When using text in an avatar, I find it best to create the image at the correct size. It seems that the image can be degraded when the forum software shrinks it to fit.

The 'correct' size for a .jpg is 150x150 pixels; the maximum size for an animated .gif (or for a .gif to retain its transparency) is 145x145 pixels.

First off, you need to make the text literally big enough to read - the smaller text in your avatar has been rendered illegible mainly because it's just too small. This is better:

Also, it can help to use high contrast between the type and the background to make it stand out more:

You can also use other methods to help your text stand out...

    Drop Shadow:

    Highlighted Edges ('Stroke' in Photoshop):

    Bevels (3D effect):

    HTH.

    No problem.

If you post your background image (without text, any size, but minimum 150x150 pixels) and also the text you want to use, I'll gladly have a go at knocking up a few avatars for you.

James, it's pretty simple. It's just not big enough.

Remember, you only have a maximum of 150 pixels to work with. The smaller type you've got there will work fine in a larger image, but at avatar size in this forum there just isn't enough resolution for the letters to be formed properly. I just checked and that small type is only four pixels in height (with another pixel underneath that as a shadow I'm guessing).

It looks like this close up, you can clearly see the five rows of pixels:

Do what I suggested earlier - create the text on a 150x150 pixel image (in other words, don't type on to a large image which the forum software will shrink). It won't make the text any more legible in your final avatar (well, if it does, it will be only marginally so) but you will be able to see if it can be read before uploading it.

Steve I just uploaded a different version without the print set to 150x150 like you said to see what it looks like , so far it clear to the eye . Now I need to try adding some print that will POP over this photo .
I'm using Paint Shop pro and haven't used it in a long time , back to the workshop !

I forgot to mention - you might get better results if you switch between 'anti-aliasing on' and 'anti-aliasing off'.

Here are a couple of examples to show you.

The font type and size is shown, I also added a 1 pixel 'stroke' edge to make the text stand out a bit more.

This reminds me, I've been meaning to change my avatar for awhile now. I'm feeling dishonest using a 20 year-old photo, even though I still look exactly the same.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I think I sort figure it out , I'm messing around with layering . The print is readable but the background photo is fuzzy so I have to get that fixed .

I'm on track but not there yet , maybe by tommorrow I will upload the finished photo .

Movie time , time to start popping my popcorn !
