PX64 + Boost11 = Great Limiter

Over on sqye's thread "Best 64-bit limiter..."  there's been some talk of how Boost11 isn't the greatest limiter out there, and I agree. It works well if you don't push it hard, but as someone said, then what's the point?

So if you need a limiter so you can make loud mixes try this:

Put the PX64 Percussion Strip on your master bus
Enable both the input and output saturation
Enable the compressor and turn the threshold all the way up to 0
Adjust the ratio up to... say... 10:1 to start with (it depends on the mix, of course)
Now put Boost11 after the PX64 on your master bus
Turn Boost11's "Boost" parameter all the way down to 0

Now slam the input to your mix bus. You can also do this by turning up the PX64's input.

I was surprised how well this results in an in-your-face slammed loud mix.  You can adjust the PX64 compressor's ratio to make Boost11 work more or less hard, so it's your main adjustment tool. The saturation takes care of a lot of the limiting, the compressor some more, and Boost11 just shaves of the remaining overs.

I tried the VX64 and the TL64 in this role, but I didn't like the VX64's compander and I didn't like the TL64's saturation. The PX64 made me smile.

Give it a try and post your impressions.

This is very interesting... I'll try it when I get the chance.

    Thanks!

I see another forum competition brewing.

    Challenge
A "standard" 30 second audio clip full of dynamics and transients.
Add your favorite compression/limiters and see who can get it the loudest while still holding true to the orriginal.
Blind testing so no revealing the plugins/techniques used until after the results are in.

Nah, I'd have to listen to all of them!

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Anyone actually try this yet?
