Pair of Large Diaphragm Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphones

I need to buy a pair of mics for different applications, but mostly to record Classical Guitar on Cardioid and Omni patterns. I already own small diaphragm condenser mics. I am interested in low-budget mics with good quality, if those qualities can ever be combined... Thank you for any contribution!

Sorry, I missed the low budget.

I don't think you'll find a pair of LDCs w/ different patterns for $500.  Maybe a piece.  SE has some variable patterns for sub $400.  There are plenty of cartiod mics, tho.

Ha.  I forgot CAD.  the 179.  And the Equitek 300.  The 179 is $200 a pop while the new 300 is $350.  The CAD Equitek 100 is better for a few more dollars (I've used the older model) but only supercartiod.

    Sterling ST79, ST59 or ST66. The ST66 rivals many mics around $1000.

Hey, guys, thanks for the replies. About the CADs, have you guys used them? I bought a pair of E70s and they sound simply awesome. Should i expect the same performance with their LDC's? Middleman, Sterlings look promising. Have you used them?

Are the CAD 100s still made in USA? How about the 179 and the 300?

The CAD Equitek (I think they bought them) 100s are made in the USA.  The others, probably China.  Most sub $1000 mics will be made in china/far east.  Even made in the USA (or Austria) will have a large percentage of chinese parts.  Companies started outsourcing, so those Chinese factories started making their own mics.

Thanks again. It would be nice to hear a sample of guitar, possibly classical, through these mics. Has anyone out there recorded it?

I had no idea they were THAT cheap. They are the de facto low end standard for multi-pattern LDCs over at GearSlutz...

Yes, I have the ST79 which I picked up for $200 at Guitar Center blowout and is the same mic as the Oceanway 6050 ($999 but can be had for $600 used). Except for two capacitor changes on the circuit board, the same mic. Some guy over at Gearslutz took both mics apart and discovered this. This has a crisp high end which needs to be dialed back in EQ but a very good mic for the price. I have used it on several vocalists and it captures a very neutral but quality sound.

A slightly better choice, if you can still find them, is the GT ST66. Tube mic with a very rich quality but rounded on the top end. This mic is on par with but of course different than a Neumann TLM49. It is not as detailed as the Neumann but richer on the low end. For thin voices I use the ST66, on most other things I use the Neumann which is a $1500 mic new but can be found for around $1100.

If you're familiar with the GearSlutz forum, and the Low End section in particular, you'll have noticed that there is a certain degree of "consensus" when it comes to what gear represents the best bang for the buck.

    Examples:

Colored preamp - Golden Age Projects Pre 73

Clean preamp - Focusrite ISA One

         Dynamic Mic - Shure SM7b

         SDC mic - Oktava MK012

Tube LDC mic - Stellar CM6

Solid State LDC mic - Audio Technica AT4047 (for vocals anyway)

         Multi-pattern LDC mic - CAD M179

         Ribbon mic - Cascade FatHead

    ...and so on.
