Pan Problem
Using Sonar 8.5.3 The two tracks in question have outputs assigned to the Aria Player, to the newest GPO 4. The first track is on channel 1, assigned to a violin. The second track is on channel 2, and assigned to a clarinet. No other tracks are assigned to GPO nor the Aria Player. The first track is panned hard left, 100% to the left. I can see that both in the Sonar track view, and also on the mixer tab of the Aria Player window. The second track is panned hard right, 100% to the right. I can also see that panning both in the Sonar track view, and on the mixer tab of the Aria Player window. Yet, on playback , one hears both of those parts equally on either side. In other words, it sounds like they are both panned directly in the center, not according to how I set it. I looked in the Event List for both tracks, to see if there were any pan controllers in it, that could conflict with the track settings. No, there are none. What is going on? Can anyone help? Why are the two instruments not panning? Thank you in advance.

Hi, Maikii - It can be difficult to pinpoint what the errors are with new GPO users, so I can't be sure what the problem is here. Are you asking for stereo tracks to be inserted when you insert Aria? When you say your two tracks, violin and clarinet, have their outputs assigned to Aria, you're talking about the MIDI tracks, or the audio channels - or both? Even before I see your answers, here's a tip - It really works best to keep things panned to center on the MIDI tracks and in Aria. Then do your panning with the audio tracks, either in the audio tracks piping in the sound from Aria, or in the bounce down if you render your tracks together for mixing. --and a side note - It's hardly ever desirable to have your instruments panned hard left or hard right. Randy B. Hi Randi, Thanks for the reply. I know it is not normal practice to pan hard left and hard right, but there is a particular reason for it in this context, that I do not have time to explain now. I am not a GPO newbie. You write to pan the audio tracks, instead of the MIDI tracks. But there is only one audio track for GPO-Aria. Both instruments go to that same stereo audio track, which of course is centered itself. GPO-Aria, however, is supposed to pan the individual tracks, to where they are supposed to be. Regarding output assignments, I was referring to the output assignments of the MIDI tracks. I have them routed to the Aria Player synth.

Are you using an Insert in the tracks?

Hi again Randy, Won't audio tracks for most synths be stereo by default? To insert the MIDI tracks, I went to the Insert menu, MIDI track. To insert the softsynth-Insert menu, Softsynths, chose Aria Player Multi_VST_x86.On the Insert SoftSynth options that come up next, only one box checked First Synth Audio Output. The MIDI tracks are both assigned to Aria Player Multi VST_x86. The audio track certainly appears to be stereo. In looking at Track Properties of it, the input is listed as AriaPlayer MultiVST_x86, 1 Out 1/Out 2:Stereo. The output of the track is listed as Asio EchoPCI Indigo IOx virtual 1/2. Looks to me like it is both inputting and outputting in stereo. I also now checked the sound card's (Echo Indigo IOX) console app., with the music playing. IT shows audio activity in both virtual playback ports 1 and 2, and also in the analog 1 and 2, the actual output ports. The pan on virtual port 1 is set hard left, and on virtual port 2, hard right. To me it certainly appears to be set up correctly for stereo. Or, am I missing something? DaveNY, I am not sure what is mean by an Insert (noun). It is set up as described above. PS I do not know why my message here appears as if it is quoted from another message, and I am unable to fix that in Edit? Suggestions for that? rbowser Hi, Maikii - It can be difficult to pinpoint what the errors are with new GPO users, so I can't be sure what the problem is here. Your other reply describes your set up in more detail, and it does seem right. But somewhere along the signal path, something is mono-- Take another careful look through. Other replies: Aria has 16 stereo outs, not one. By default, all 16 instrument slots are set to the first pair, 1/2. In the windows where instruments are selected, click the 1/2 and you'll find all the other selections available. You want to have each of your instruments assigned to different audio outs. In the Sonar insert synth dialogue, the first MIDI track can be inserted for you, so you don't need to go through two routines to insert your tracks, and when you insert Aria, you want to ask for all audio outs - you'll get 16 tracks of audio set up and ready for you to use. If you really want to use the soft synth volume and pan controls, be aware that unlike KP2 which was the platform for GPO before Aria, the MIDI controls in Sonar control those in Aria unless you disengage them. Set the pan and volumes in the MIDI tracks, not in Aria, otherwise, your settings will keep getting written over. Let us know how you fare. Randy B.
