Panning troubles

Hi all,

I am trying to position and instrument track but have some difficulty in establishing a hard pan. The setup is really simple with just Sonar X1 studio and an instrument track on a laptop with no other hardware involved.. When i try a pan in the mixer the sound moves in the desired direction but there is always a residual sound. This can be heard clearly on the speakers of headphone. Here's a few things i tried.

1) changing the stereo panning settings in preferences.

Nothing changes whichever setting i choose.

2) insert channel tools.

Here things start to get interesting. When panned completely to the left or right the meter only shows that signal but there's still the residue on the speakers. But if i pan to right in the channel tools and pan to the left in the mixer all that remains is silence.

Now my thought was maybe there something wrong with the audio interface in my laptop. However, when playing a song with the mediaplayer and opening up the audio mixer from the control panel i can pan the sound to left or right with the desired effect and no crosstalk.

I am sure i am missing something basic here. If anyone could point out what i would be very grateful.

Cheers.

Do you have any effects on buses?

I start with a new track - normal template - and insert an instrument. There's nothing else added to any track or bus.

    Hmm.

What specific instrument are you using? Or does this happen with everything?

Tried it with three different instruments. Also did an export to wave with a automation of the panning movement. Again you can see level drop to zero in either the left or right channel (master) but the residuall effext is there in the exported wave file when listened to, When i import the wave back into sonar you can recognize in the waveform where the panning occurred.

Hmm. That's wiped out my guesses, I'm afraid. I've just had a mess around, and I can't even work out how you'd get this to happen on purpose. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Well thank you for taking the time to look into this. I just installed sonar on a Desktop computer and it worked like expected imediately! So i am left with figuring out what is not in order on the notebook.

Figured it out! Pretty basic come to think of it. The onboard soundcard had some 3d spatializer going on with different settings for games, music and movies but always on. There was a tiny toggle somewhere to turn it of.
