Party Tonight

New song..... I haven't been writing a lot recently and this song is actually 30+ years old..... just finished recording it for a publisher pitch.

https://app.box.com/s/i7g5w4sz5bq83semzwii

Verse 1

There's country music playing on the radio
Listen to the singer, he's singing soft and low
A little bit of bluegrass to kick up your heels
It's Saturday night and you know how I feel

We're gonna have a good time, we're gonna have a party tonight.

Verse 2
I got my baby with me and she's holding on tight
We're gonna do it one time, and it's gonna be right
A little bit of candlelight a bottle of wine
I know we're both gonna feel so fine

We're gonna have a good time, we're gonna have a party tonight.

Chorus....

Ohhhhh.... I can feel it coming on
Yeahhh... I know it won't be wrong
Ohhhhh I can feel it coming on
We're gonna have a good time, we're gonna have a party tonight.

Verse 3
Well here she comes now and we're ready to go
We won't take it fast, but we won't go slow
A little bit of kissing to start the night
A whole lotta love with no end in sight

We're gonna have a good time, we're gonna have a party tonight.

Chorus & tag

Dang, I could see this as a Toby Keith song or even a Garth Brooks (at points) definitely Dierks Bentley or Blake Shelton. Got that good'ol boy feel.

    Hi,
I really like the song and arrangement.  The final mix seems like there is too much high end and not enough low end.
    Please compare to this song:
    http://jog.fm/artists/george-strait/workout-songs/when-youre-in-love

I think you should remix it for a fuller sound.

Rock 'n Roll! The lows sound fine to me? But I'm in the cans with really good low end. Is that you playing the lead Herb? If so, excellent job!

If this song is 30 years old you were ahead of your time. As far as I'm concerned there's always room for another drinkin', dancin', rockin' and foolin' around song and you've captured that vibe here perfectly. As Rimshot mentioned above, there could be a little more punch to the bass in your mix. I would also consider some tape delay slap on the voice, too, just to add to the chaos.

Josh:  It would be cool to have a major N-town artist pick this up..... we'll see. It's in N-town now for some ears on it. One never knows....

Rimshot: thanks.... I mixed this mostly on cans and checked it on monitors.  The bass on this is kind of busy so I didn't want it to get too clustered. I pushed it as far as I dared. I can always have another look, but as a pitch to publisher..... the perfection of the track is a close second to getting the song idea across.

Robby: unfortunately, no.... that's not me playing.

Guitarpima: Thanks for listening and commenting

Larry:  Ahead of my time......? More likely late to the party.....  and yes, I did consider a slap back on the lead vox. I put one on the BGV but since I mix them low, they are not as easy to hear. Thanks for your observations and comments.

Great country song!  A little light on the bottom but sounds really clean.

I played in a country rock band for a few years in the mid-90s when "new" country was really starting to take off and this would have fit perfectly.   But it doesn't come across as dated in any way at all so I think it would work just as well today.

I'm never changing who I am.

People have grown to expect a certain mindset? And who am I to disappoint my fans? I personally enjoy a big bottom? So "Bottoms up Herb!" Bottoms up... I for one would like to put all of this bottom talk "behind us?"  We need to spank this bottom talk in to submission? No more butt cracks? Let's put it in the rear view mirror... I was questioning a young lady just this past weekend about her lineage? "Who's your daddy? Who's your daddy?" I asked over and over again (we were on ancestry.com and I was trying to trace it back)

I just thought the kick was a bit dull and need more cut through the mix (more high end). I am listening on cheap phones, so there may be some very low end that Im not hearing.

Overall this is damn well executed country, love listening to tracks that are radio ready pro quality on these forums, this is one.

Keys are awesome in the pan field and I love the lead and bg vox when they break free now and again.

I think the song is great. I thought the mix worked well but that may just be because the playing, recording and production were so excellent that it would have worked a number of ways. It can be a personal thing (a mix), but if 3 or 4 post replies are suggesting the low end needs to poke out a little more then.....who knows. You didn't ask for any critique, just put it up for us to listen to, so I'll just say "well done".

Dan & Rebel:  Yeah, I thought the mix on the bottom was fairly balanced for the music. The bass lines are fairly busy and they sounded decent (level wise) here and for the genre and style of the song. I'm a sucker for big fat bottom ends (musically speaking) with lots of punch, but there's also a time to pull back a bit and that was the call I made on this one in the mix stages..... for a variety of reasons.

We'll see.... this is a pitch to publisher and the pub has this version in his hands and on his desk so...... it's wait and see.  Since there is a deadline, I should hear something rather soon.  I have a few more to get to him before the deadline.... but I'm not posting those here at this time.... perhaps later.

Herb when I listen to this on my small speaker in mono at low volume I hear a few things. The snare seems a little loud to me and there is also a lot of ambience or something around the snare. Because of that it seems to be taking up slightly more space than it needs to.

The kick is not audible on the small speaker either (because of that it seems out of balance in terms of what is happening on beat 1/3 and 2/4 etc. Not level balance but rhythm balance) and mostly the vocals are a little loud in the small speaker too. Just some thoughts that is all. The small speaker in mono down low is ruthless.

Otherwise good party song for sure.

    Herb,

Good luck with the pitch, the song sounds great.   I like the Jerry Lee Lewis piano vibe with the more contemporary country sound of the rest of the band.  Really well executed.

That stuff helps you crank them out quicker, no doubt? But I can't help but think it's a poison on the creative soul... I know you're a guitar player? And a damn good one? Why not play the guitar? I don't play the pedal steel, ok, I get that. I don't play the fiddle (well...) Ok, I get that. But I can play the damn guitar, and so can you? I can play the bass, and so can you, I can play the mando? And so can you, "etc..." We can all program the drums... I want to hear YOU! Even if you are a neocon right wing wacko?
