Patch Browser not setting new midi instrument

New to Sonar Artist ... old user of cakewalk for a couple decades now ... so the interface is rather new for me.  But from what I've read / watched, I should be able to select a midi instrument using the Patch Browser button and selecting one of the instruments on the pop up window.  But I can't get this to work.  If I "play" the midi clip and listen I can hear the instrument change to whatever I select on the screen .. but when the track loops back it seems to go back to whatever "default" setting there is.  I've looked to see that I'm not adding a midi "change" to the track and i don't see where there is any hard coded midi assignment on the track.
 
Any leads on where I can be looking to resolve this problem?
