Patch numbers or names?

Hi all,
I was playing about the other day trying to change patches and I was getting up a list of patch names to choose from. All well and good and i tried quite a few, I was happy.
Today I was doing tutorial #1, trying to be a good boy and learn what to do properly, and now when I try to change patch I just get a list of numbers instead.
Any ideas?

Air goes in and out. Blood goes round and round. Deviation from the above is bad.

Try changing the bank and see if the names re-appear.

Yeah ...there's a "bug" or something that shows you a bunch of banks...and you get all excited thinking WOW!!! I have lots of sounds here in this midi thing.....But....they are all the same. Go back to the one at the top of the banks list...that's where the names are.

What synth are you using? I t must be a GM synth to use the banks and patches.
Bank 0 will give you patches at all 128 choices. Banks 1-4 will have a smaller set of options. Banks higher than 4 will only show numbers, reflecting empty patches, and will behave differently, depending on the synth you are using.

Hello, RobertB. I am directing this quick little question to you because you are online at the moment.

I am considering buying Music Creator 4 so that I can create soundtracks for a magic show I am developing. I do not intend to create my own music using instruments or anything. I plan to take some (royalty free) songs off of some CDs I've got and sequence them. I need to have a lot of flexibilty in terms of editing the length of the songs and cross-fading between them, etc. The music needs to be molded to fit my show.

Is Music Creator 4 for me? I'm not quite clear as to whether I can just put a CD in my PC drive and pipe that music into this program. Not a very technical way to frame the question, but I would appreciate your advice.

    Thanks!

    Ah, a magician. Nice!
It looks like you are wanting to use audio tracks (from the CD's). MC4 will give you an affordabe tool to do what I think you want, but there is a bit of a learning curve.
Trimming the songs to length and crossfades are fairly easy, and MC4 doesn't have a lot of the extra features that complicate things for you.
If you are wanting to produce a sound track that would set a time frame for your act, MC4 could serve you well.
Are there any variables that we might need to know about?

Variables? Hmmm. I don't think I've got anything unusual I'm needing to concoct or ask the software to do, if that's what you mean ... and the CDs from which I will be loading the music are standard.

My vision is that, at the start of my 25 minute show, I will hit play and music will play and fade in and out throughout the show without intervention by me in a way which fits my magical actions. I assume this program allows me to set cues at particular moments during the project (i.e. 4th track fades up at exactly 15:33 and plays for 45 seconds...). My main uncertainty was about loading the CD music in. The program seems targeted to guys who've got synthesizers and are writing their own music. That's cool but it's not what I'm needing to do.

So, it sounds like this program will do the trick. (No pun intended. I really don't like puns!)

    Thanks!

Yes, the program is primarilly targeted for original music, however your CD tracks can be imported as wav files (you would want to save them t your hard drive for editing). You have very precise control over when the tracks start to play, and you can control fades, etc. Maybe even introduce a little drama with volume envelopes where appropriate.
I wouldn't suggest using the program itself live (or any computer based program), but you could burn your final output to a CD, and use that as a backer for your act. MC4 is capable of giving you a quality sound track. Your choreography will have to be spot on, as a continous sound track will cut no slack.
Bottom line, MC4 will do what you are asking it to do.

You will be able to load music from cd's, and if you put your first in the first track, time it out, fade out to a fade in of the second track...etc., you could do this very easily with this program, and just forget all that midi stuff. I mean, I wish I could forget all that midi stuff...what a head ache.

    Thanks, guys.

You are right about being spot on. What would help with that would be a big "Play / pause" button I could put on the floor and tap inconspiciously with my foot as the show went on. That way, I could stop the soundtrack if something happened during the show which required a delay (like a really fun volunteer comes on stage and I need more time to joke around with them).

Does such a thing exist? A big button like that? I wouldn't want to be fishing around for a remote in the usual sense with small buttons. That wouldn't be very graceful or artistic. I am not an audio- or techno-phile at all. What I have described sounds exotic to me but, for all I know, you guys might have them all over your houses because they are so commonplace.

    I appreciate your feedback.

My thoughts.... it's your show....when YOU are finished with the volunteer....usher them off in a nice manner...to keep your show on schedule. other than that...many CD players nowdays have remote controls... keep it in your pocket and if you see a need to ad lib with the volunteer for a few extra minutes...hit pause. the remote is small enough to be inconspicuous...BTW: isn't that what "magic" is all about really....slight of hand and redirecting attention? To be sure...you should be able to hit a pause button w/o many people "seeing" it.

You may not have changed it, but sometimes it seems to change itself. If it's on bank 0, change it to bank 1. Or vice versa. If that doesn't help, ask again. I just think I remember that fixing that problem for me before...

Hoorah!!! Changed bank and the patch names have appeared. Slightly odd though, if I forget to insert softsynths, there is another set of patch names, which make no sound although midi is recording, but once softsynth is inserted they are replaced. Shame cos there is a Hammond Organ on there but not once ss is in there. Oh well, no big deal. Im sure when Im ready I can get a Hammond patch from somewhere.
    Cheers guys!

Do you have th MS Wavetable synth enabled as a MIDI output? MC may be pulling the menu from there.
Some of the patch names are different in TTS-1, but they retain the spirit. The idea of General MIDI is that any GM synth will play the same sound (more or less) from the same bank/patch setting.
Your Hammond organ is Organ 1 in TTS-1(Bank 0,patch 17)
Here is a link to Wikipedia, and an article on GM2, which TTS-1 supports. There is a printable table that makes for a handy reference. It also shows how those seemingly random patches in banks 1-4 are actually related.

Thanks Rob! Thats very useful and I can see how it works now, cheers! I looked through all the banks in TTS but it doesnt show a Hammond, at least by name as I havnt tried them all. I dont know what Wavetable is, Ive not seen it on the computer before and I havnt installed it, Im guessing its a softsynth?
Albert, Im still new at this (very very!) but I do love the old Hammond sound and it will be the base for a lot of the music I want to make (eventually) so i would be very interested in your samples. Are they emailable?

The Microsoft GS Wavetable Synthesizer is a hardware synth which is in almost every sound card (chip) of every computer ever made with a Windows operating system installed. In MC, if you click on 'Options>MIDI Devices' at the top you can see if the MS GS Wavetable is selected as your MIDI device.
