'Path to the Past' - collab

Hello folks,

Here's a new song, borne of a collaboration between Heinz Karnitschar (Airmeki), Nick Pendergast (Opaque Slogan) and myself;

PATH TO THE PAST

The song was written by Heinz, after we chatted about doing a collab and I sent him a little guitar riff - he amazed me by coming back with a full-blown song out of that small beginning!

We persauded Nick to contribute his excellent bass skills to this, and well, we hope you enjoy!

(For the purposes of the project we call ourselves 'The Commonwealth' - hopefully there'll be more!)

*Lead Vocals / Synthesizer / Sound FX/ Mixing - Heinz Karnitschar *Bass Guitar - Nick Pendergast *Lead Guitar / Rhythm Guitar - James Griffiths *Background Vocals - Anne Jarman, Danielle Massing, Kimberlee Massing

Interesting tune. I'm diggin' Nick's reference to BB King's The Thrill Is Gone. I thinking that the vocal delivery could be a bit more direct, less dramatic, for example without the spoken narrative parts. I like the big chorus with the backing vocals. I like the guitar bits as well. I like the overall idea, maybe just tighten up the arrangement a bit.

Alright James! My biggest pic is the title post "Past to the Past". Path my friend! LOL. Ahhh, revenge is so sweet! I'm amazed at what came out of that bit of guitar playing! This is a wonderful tune that all of you did in every way. Great with the girls doing the backup vocals. Heinz, your flair for the theatrical shows here, and I know that's what you were shooting for in your singing. Nick, your bass playing is impeccable and a tone to die for! James, your guitar skills always amaze me. Your playing, style, and tone, seems to fit like a glove in all the songs you do. Nice job girls! Good composition and a good mix. Loved it!

Hehe ...you got me Larry, bang to rights.....duly edited Thanks a lot pal, but credit where credit's due, Heinz was the creative force behind this (he arranged the BGV parts as well), it's easy to sit back and come up with guitar parts at my leisure!

This was a real treat to listen to. I especially like to bass part (agreed on the reference to the thrill is gone, but it works great here. I absolutely love the guitar work. Especially the background part (reminded me of the Police?). But I'm wanting to hear more of it.

    Neat tune, very entertaining.

    Very cool, lads,
James, isn't it fun when a little idea blooms like that? Someone hears something in your idea and runs with it.
Is that the infamous black acoustic guitar that sounds remarkably like a Les Paul?
Heinz, yeah you have a flair for the dramatic. A touch of the dark side here, eh? Love the bgv's.
Nick, good to be hearing more from you lately. You've been quiet for a while.
This is what I like about this place, hearing different talents combine, who would otherwise never have connected.
ps. Heinz, looks like you might be joining James and me, among others, on our little friends' Christmas list.

    Hey Commonwealthers,
Nice tune. Great collab, the more I listen the more I appreciate the detail in the parts and the mix. Really like that guitar riff with the delays. Background vocals are just stunning in this. Really nice. Nice bells and synthy bits throughout the piece. Nice guitar lead break and cool chorusy arpeggios. Heinz you paint your music with such a grand and sweeping brush. Nice bass line in this, it really provides the foundation and groove for the piece. Drums are done well too, they really fit the piece. Nice work.

Ha ha...very ambitious project here guys.
Why do I get a Vincent Price/Thriller vibe?...
Overall I'd say its done very well...I'd like the drums to be a touch more upfront, but you've got lots going on here.
Good solo at 3:07 James...well thought out.

Great job guys. I have to admit at first I thought whhaaattt in the world did Heinz do now!!! But it didnt' take long for the song to "hook" me and then I was into the intrigue of the melody and the vocals. Heinz, I would also like to know how you did those BGV, they sound really nice and are set kind of far off, yet very distinct. Congrats on great collab guys.

Thanks for the listen and for your time to leave your feedback! Much appreciated.

Duane - Whaaattt did he do now, eh? Was that a 'Urgh - what the heck was he thinking' - kinda reaction, or a 'Wow, he did it again' ?
Thanks, buddy for your nice words, as always it's a pleasure to hear from you! I'll send you too a personal email re: BGVs ...

Very cool, I like the mix of styles a lot. Can use some tighter vox here and there, esp with the string parts it sounds iffy, and I dunno about the chorus - maybe keep the vox lower, parlando. You cannot compete with the female reach anyway, and contrast can maybe work to your advantage, by sticking to the bassy parts.

Just my 2 cents - I wish I was this far.

Fellas, I haven't read the other comments so bear with me if I repeat their observations.
Heinz, well written song. I like the synth that holds it all together. I think this is your best singing so far. You're getting a little more force into it and I think that helps you with accurate pitch (not like there was a problem before). You've gained some strength. You could perhaps get a bit more diaphragm into it, but this sounds good.

James, I always liked you guitar style. You're never over the top, taking a more melodic approach, and your rhythm tracks here are spot on. As usual, your lead work is very tasty.

Nick, I think that's a terrific bass line, somewhat understated but nice phrasing. I think it could come up a little in the mix to help drive the synth track.

Good work by the backup singers, they of angelic voice.

And Heinz, a good job with the mix too. Well done by everyone, a fruitful collaboration.

Thanks for all the kind words on the bass line and sound. I haven't heard the Ben E King track so my conscience is clear as far as the apparent plagiarizm goes.

The Commonwealth ! Nice catchy name! The music was good, the singing was good, the instrumentation was good, bye golly I think the whole darn song was good. What an excellent story and musical production. I think your all trying to give Pink Floyd a run for the money. You could darn near cash in on this one. Very, very excellent project! Great work from the trio!! Thanks for doing this and sharing. John
