Pat's Waltz
I wrote this for a fan of mine from Canada. She and her husband drove hundreds of miles to see one of my shows. This is just a rough draft of how I wrote and arranged the tune. Before it goes on my next album, it will be redone from scratch. Let me know if you think it's worth keeping and any suggestions are welcome. Thank you for your time and ears. https://soundcloud.com/stringjammer-1/pats-waltz

Nice recording, and boy, can you play that fiddle! I'd say keep it, though it reminds me of a lot of different things I've heard back when I lived in Texas. A good, strong melody would raise it to the next level and make it stand out. Regards, Dan

This sounds like it has potential, always a pleasure to hear you play that fiddle of your, I know this is a rough mix, but the bass was, how can I put this, very present here.
Will keep a furry ear out for the polished product, thanks for sharing.

Yeah, not too shabby for a rough draft. I think it's a keeper. I liked the breaks you've thrown in, as though they're meant for dancers.... I'd definitely be curious to hear the final version if this is just a draft.

Bapu, Thanks! Appreciate your ears. Dan, Thank you very much! So you think the tune lacks a melody? Wookie, Thank you, my furry friend. So, bass too much/too loud? Steve, Thanks! I shall indeed keep it and work toward a final draft. I'll keep you "posted". LOL Rikkie, Thank you, and yes, I double-tracked the Taylor in the guitar break.

Very nice indeed. Wonderful playing of both fiddle and guitar. The style of the song reminds me a bit of "down east" country. If this is a draft, I sure look forward to the final product.

This might do well on A Prairie Home Companion. Super nice feel to this. Performances seen very solid . . . How would it sound with a bass that is more upright/acoustic-y? Just wondering. Perhaps an echo of Dan's comment about a melody - your piece is great as is, but having just listened to it, I can't really recall what the melody was. I'm probably missing out but I don't know if I felt a "hook" in there - I know this is not Justin Bieber music so maybe the performances stand on their own. The Ken Burns Civil War music is in the same vein but for some reason, perhaps because of the abundant repeition of a particular theme, sets the hook. Maybe it's the "trills" in your melody that hide the melody, to my ears, OR that you have a ton of themes going on. Your piece is remarkable (listening for the second time now) in that it invokes a Mariachi style, and a Austrian beer hall style, and it's the same tune. I don't know if those were any influences to you. At 3:20, right at the end, a little mistiming of the guitar I think? The middle guitar section was very well recorded, as is the piece generally. I'm just picking nits, really. Nice tune. You clearly know what you are doing here . . . best, -Tom

Scott the bass was just a little to present not so much to loud as to much, it really rumbled the room.

Scott, After a few listens this is a tough one to offer comment on. First, the playing is outstanding so I am commenting only on the arrangement and instrumentation. If you are going for a traditional Western Music feel I would stick with this version. If you are going for a more modern western feel I would consider adding a steel guitar and bring some drums to the forefront for the waltzers/dancers and maybe some piano. Personally I prefer that instrumentation for this style music. You could also walk the bass here and there for a variety. It is a good tune and definitely worth working out the arrangement. Regards
