[CWBRN-23593] - Pause doesn't pause, it does "Stop with Now Marker"
I noticed this when I started using X3 but wasn't sure if it was a bug or just a change. Recently the X3 reference guide told me it's a bug. Below are the steps to reproduce the issue. 1. Load whatever project you have. 2. Make sure the "On Stop, Rewind to Now Marker" option is enabled (in Track view's [Options] menu). 3. Start playback. 4. Click the Pause button in the Control Bar's Transport module. [Expected Results] "Playback stops, but the Now Time cursor and the Now Time marker do not move." (X3 Reference Guide P.191) And if you re-start playback from there (by clicking the Pause button again or hitting Spacebar) and stop playback (by clicking the Stop button or hitting Spacebar again), it takes you back to where you were at step 3. [Actual Results] The Now Time marker moves to the current time. This behavior is "stop" (not pause). Note: There are two commands we should know: "Stop with Now Marker" (assigned to Ctrl+Spacebar by default) and "Play/Pause" (not assigned to any key by default, I think). The Pause button in the Control Bar and the "Play/Pause" command are both supposed to pause the playback, which worked fine in X2. In X3, both seem to show the "Stop with Now Marker" behavior. Reported on Jan 24, 2014 Confirmed and submitted to development on Jan 25, 2014

I can't see how Cakewalk could possibly confirm this - Pause works exactly as expected here Jlienx

I think I understand the point here. When you cycle pause, the "marker" at the top of the track view continues to creep forward, so if your intent is to play parts and then revert back to where you started, you cannot. It doesn't keep a memory of its initial location before the entire process begins (i.e. when you finally do want to revert to the now time marker, it actually reverts to the last place you paused it).

I've always considered the way pause works to be normal and desired, it's always worked this way far as I can remember. Dan

I do know that the space bar stops working intermittently but is related some how to a MEMORY bleed. SAVE the project seems to clean up the bleed and the space bar starts working again on the transport. Jim PS - been happening since X1

I think some people are confusing Pause and Stop-without-Rewind (Ctrl+Spacebar if "On Stop Rewind to Now" is left enabled in Options). Pause does not have a default binding, but I've had it bound to Alt+Spacebar since before the X series. In 8.5, X1 and X2, it paused the Now Cursor, leaving the Now Marker wherever it was when playback was started. In X3, the Now Marker jumps forward to the Now Cursor on Pause just as it does on Stop. This is a bug. It doesn't work as described in the Ref. Guide, and it doesn't work as previous versions did.

Same here. So you must have noticed the bug immediately as well.

Actually, I disable On Stop Rewind to Now Marker, and mostly just use Spacebar to stop playback without rewinding. If I need to keep restarting from a certain point, I usually set up a loop. So I hadn't actually noticed the problem, but when I saw all the contradictory responses in this thread I did quick check to confirm and thought I'd try to help clear up some confusion.

I can understand and reproduce #1. In summary when hitting pause it should not mark a point for the now time to begin from (when pressing stop followed by play). thanks..

According to Jlien X not fixed in X3E.

Surely this IS a bug? Not fixed in X3e. Page 191 of the X3 ref guide: "To pause playback • Click the Pause button . Playback stops, but the Now Time cursor and the Now Time marker do not move." But with 'rewind on stop' checked, the marker (the blob at the top of the track pane) stays in place on 'play' and the cursor (the vertical line) jumps back to it on 'stop'. But 'pause' does not just stop the transport, it also moves the 'now' marker forward to the 'now' cursor position, creating a new 'stop' position, rather than just pausing everything in place. With 'rewind on stop' unchecked, hitting 'play' makes the 'now' marker move with the 'now' cursor, so 'pause' has the same effect as 'stop' - the cursor has nowhere else to jump back to. I feel the correct operation would be for the 'now' marker to stay where it is on 'play' in either case and 'pause' should allow the transport to resume from the current cursor position. If 'rewind on stop' is checked, the 'now' cursor should jump back to the 'now' marker position when 'stop' is hit, as now . But, if 'rewind on stop' is not checked pressing 'stop' - when transport is paused or running - should force the marker to jump forward to the 'now' cursor position. But pressing 'pause' during playback should leave it where it is. I am a long-time fan of Sonar, I hope this comment is taken as constructively as it is meant

Cakewalk has confirmed it to be a bug, however it hasn't been fixed this time around (X3E). Maybe X3F. Cheers...
