Per-channel rate/tempo?
Can Sonar 8 do per-channel rate/tempo in MIDI tracks? I'd like to try composing with a different tempo in each MIDI track.

No I don't think so. You could try odd quantizing though. Tempo is a global thing. Unlike bands where members can do any tempo they want. Sounds awful though.

If you record each midi track at a different speed and do NOT enable groove clip'ing, it will hold the temp of what you recorded it at and not follow the projects tempo. There ya go.............. Cj

f you record each midi track at a different speed and do NOT enable groove clip'ing, it will hold the temp of what you recorded it at and not follow the projects tempo. No, the existing MIDI is going to follow the tempo change by default. In order to prevent this, after recording each MIDI track/clip, open its properties dialogue (Alt-Enter, or right-click -> Properties), set its Time Base to Absolute (SMPTE), and Lock Position. Its length will change relative to the time ruler when you change the tempo, and it will continue to play back at the same absolute rate it had previously when you record the next track/clip. You have to be very careful how you do this not to get wierd results. Specifically, before you change tempos, make sure you have a copy of the previous tempo entered in the tempo map at the exact beginning of the clip you just recorded, otherwise its starting position will move relative to the time ruler, which you probably don't want. There are many other "gotchas" to look out for when you start messing with tempos like this, but it gets too complicated to explain them all. It depends on what you trying to do. The best advice I can give is don't add any audio to the project until you have all the MIDI playing the way you want it.

No, the existing MIDI is going to follow the tempo change by default. when you record midi, as i said above, it will not follow the tempo. It will keep the timing at wich you reocrded it in, unless you groove clip it. I said nothing about tempo change. Neither did the original poster. so you can have the project at any ONE tempo and just reocrd the midi tracks at any tempos, and it will keep the performance in tact. Just like audio. JUST DONT GROOVE CLIP IT

I said nothing about tempo change. Neither did the original poster. It's all in your interpretation. The OP said "I'd like to try composing with a different tempo in each MIDI track." I am assuming he would like to play each track to a click at the appropriate tempo. In order to do that, he's going to have to do what I recommended. If he uses a click from a different source, or he doesn't need a click or care about being able to quantize anything after each take, he can do it your way.

Yea right, it depends on what he means by composing. I take it as recording, cause thats how i compose music. He could be using pre made loops. So, your correct and I'm correct. Cj

So, your correct and I'm correct. Care to wager which answer the OP will like better? I could use a control surface. What do you need?
