Phew, enough already!

Somehow or another I've just spent the whole week since last Thursday being medically examined and tested.  I guess a load of appointments just turned up at the same time.

I've spent 9 hours just in waiting rooms during that period, 3 hours of that being a delay to get to see the gastroenterologist last friday.

I'm not complaining though as at least I can't say that nobody is caring and my General Practitioner is something of a saint.  I've been really lucky there.

There's been some positives too in that I've now been discharged from the care of the Mental Health service team as they are now convinced that my long term chronic fatigue/depression/anxiety condition is most definitely physiological rather than psychological (I've been telling them that for the last 6 years!).  They've also discovered that I have an intolerance to one of the medications that I've been taking and they are going to change that, so there are some real hopes of an improvement there.

Other than that tests have shown that I currently have the lung function of an 83 year old so smoking is a definite no, no from now on and I'm now on a good course of nicotine replacement therapy which is feeling comfortable so far.

I think I just needed to summarize all that out loud as I'm feeling like I've just been through a mangle, and I do feel that you people here have ALL been a huge source of support for me over the last few years, not being able to get out much and all that.

So here's an opportunity to thank y'all for that and to give Bayoubill an honourable mention too.

I thought you quit smoking last year? Well, you did it once, you can do it again. I'm glad you're seeing some improvement and I hope you continue to see more. I know it sure wouldn't be the same around here without you, not by a long shot. Glad you choose to hang out here and grace us with your wit and presence. :)

Sounds like good news to me too. I you don't get better find another doctor but it sounds like they are on the right track. Keep a positive attitude. Not smoking is going to make you feel SO much better. I quit in the 80s, thogh I switched to Copenhagen only in the evening for a while and eventually it was all gone. Now I smoke a cigar about once a month when the mood hits, have a sore throat for a day and aa bad taste for two days... some people neverr learn (that would be me).

JB, I can attest that very often we know more about what is going on inside us than we realize but don't follow our instincts quickly enough. I learned the hard way that the problem is we don't do enough about it until something gives or the problem gets too big that it cannot be ignored or becomes an emergency.

I am really pleased you are now getting the full medical attention you deserve, I am sure things will start to get better for you from now on.

Jon, I really hope this change in approach and re-evaluation leads to some much-deserved improvements in your condition.

You mention how our little community has been so supporting. Indeed that's true, but also remember how much help, advice, solace and large dollops of common sense you've handed out to others in here. I guess you reap what you sow in this life my friend! So let's hope all the kind words and good intentions are followed through by the health professionals now on your case.

You and Kerry have counselled me with a quite few of my concerns and worries in the last couple of years Jon, my only hope is that I can repay that affection and kindness one day. The sentiments I'm expressing here are sincere, as you know, but if ever there's anything else I can do, just let me know.

I use the phrase "you're one of the good guys" sparingly, but you're up there at the top of the list mate.

Many times expressing the turmoil one experiences is a big part of the healing process.  There is a biblical reference for this however, I'll leave it at that.

I've read on many ocassions how you have championed many members who have been under attack here and your actions, to defend those, in these forums are the things that I respect the most about you.  I don't comment much here, but I just wanted to encourage you in this regard.  You have many friends here and it is my opinion that they all sincerly wish to support you in your journey.

I am sincerly happy to hear that things are going better for you and pray for your complete recovery.

    JB:
Good to read you're on the path to getting better & that the docs seem to have found the root cause of your problems. Scariest thing is it took 6 years for them to find a cause.

As to quitting smoking - I never smoked but my late dad did. He gave it up cold turkey from 4 pack a day and never regretted it. He did gain weight from eating (which some say is a replacement activity) but he didn't really mind as for the first time in years he really could savor the taste of food once again. And think of the money you'll have to spend on music stuff!

WOW, there's some moving words and responses there.  Thanks all.

I had to accept some time ago that the underlying condition could well endure as I've suffered from Dysthimia since childhood so that is more of a management issue rather than looking for the fix.

The fact that the specialists here are all looking for physiological answers is quite exciting and progressive as most depressive patients are treated under the mental health banner, and most chronic depression sufferers will tell you if there was a way of getting relief by amending thought patterns or by changing behaviour and outlook they'd have found it.

The drug I have an intolerance to is incidental as the chronic symptoms I was having pre-date that medication but it has certainly been exacerbating the issue. On the positive side of that the drug may also have stopped me having a heart attack meantime as I also have hereditary heart disease unrelated to the depressive illness.  Nowadays there are other statin based drugs to treat cholesteral so one of these may work better, alongside the diet regime that I currently follow.

Another major development is that I have recently been offered work trials on a web based project until the end of the year in order to see if I can cope with it and whether it would be a viable area for me to be involved with in the long term, being as my ability to play for a living was taken away at the outset of this bout of ill health.

So I'm agreeing with Reece, to me it's all good stuff and praise be indeed!
