I wish I had Photoshop but the price and the little I would use it stops me. I think the government should provide free photoshop for everyone. (runs farther away) J

I use PhotoShop all the time but only have CS 1 which aborts about 95% of the time when I'm using the magic wand selector (which naturally is the tool I need to use most right now)... *Sigh*

I have Lightroom and Illustrator. Lightroom has a much better workflow for photography than Photoshop IMO. It's an absolute joy to use. Illustrator is also a fantastic program and I much prefer it for drawing stuff than Photoshop. I think they're pretty reasonable price wise, considering what they do. I bet the number of people who are using cracked copies of Photoshop is phenomenal however. When my dad did a photography course at his local college the freaking TEACHER was selling cracked copies to the class . The only people who are making real money from cracked Photoshop are the people who are selling Photoshop tutorial books and manuals. I know someone who has a cracked copy of the entire Creative Suite, but I bet he's spend upwards of $500 on books for Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, After Effects etc. You'd think Adobe would want a bigger slice of this pie considering it's their cracked software that is selling the books. I don't know much about copyright law but couldn't they at least forbid the use of screenshots in commercial printed material without the payment of some kind of fee?

I've definitely been jonesing for the latest Creative Suite (CS 6), but they want over $2,000! So, not going to happen until sometime after I have a real paying job again.

You might consider a Creative Cloud subscription. You pay a flat monthly fee... and have access to literally everything Adobe. I had a CS5 bundle... and that allowed me to get the subscription for $30/month for the first year. Easily worth it (for me)... as I use After Effects, Photoshop, Audition, and Premier Pro.

The Adobe cloud will end up being $720 a year for the rest of your life... and that's per person... which is too say that you can only use one or two of those licenses at a time... which is too say you are paying for all of them and not using most... ... and it's $720/year for the rest of your life... OR you get kicked to the side of the road and have to use Gimp. No thanks... I stocked up on free standing licenses. I bought more Photoshop 6 because it was my LAST Chance to upgrade before they pulled my plug... I haven't even opened the UPS box because CS4 does everything need... but now I'm still in a upgrade chain should something happen where I need PS 7+. That was like a $200 tax/license just to avoid getting shafted worse further down the road. It seems to me that buying into Adobes cloud is like telling Adobe you are willing to get taken to the cleaners year after year. Adobe needs to think about a business model that is sustainable rather than just attempting to keep the growth model going when they don't really have much left to do with their products. All they have done in the past few years is made each of their products do more of what their other products do and then try to sell you all the products that already do everything. Why would you need 3d animtaion in Photoshop when you already have it in AE, PP, and Flash? Just because? That's not worth $720/year for the rest of your life. It's not a business model that will last... it's currently in the executive's cash extraction phase. Luckily the existing apps actually work real well. best regards, mike

If you don't already have at least Creative Suite CS 3, it's $49.95 per month ($600 per year) and, if you do, it's only $29.99 per month ($360 per year). Let's say you go ahead and buy the whole thing new for $2,300, then you update each time for another $800-$1,000 - sure, they're yours (something I really prefer), and I realize you don't need to update every version, but just buying the full product and getting one version upgrade is about the same as six years of Creative Cloud. Of course, for me currently, the monthly charge is WAY more affordable. I've still got more research to do. Another option for me (since it seems I'm always going back to schools to learn new stuff anyway) is to enroll for a class or two and get the Student version (since it's only for me anyway) for around $750 plus tuition.

I thought the target price after the first year was $60/month If I made a mistake there... then it's 12x what ever it really is. I've been wondering what happens when you stop paying the monthly fee... ? best, mike

I just looked and I think Adobe backed off $10 a month... The $29.99 used to be advertised as 1/2 price for the first year. ... the discount is probably a response to the over whelming customer approval. :-)

And they wonder why people download a crack for the whole suite off the Pirate Bay...
