Piano Loops - And other 3rd Party EZ Keys MIDI
Any good? http://piano-loops.com/ I have grabbed some of the demos and will be trying the out later but opinions on the full packs would be welcome. I find their website a bit flaky which never instills confidence. Are there any othe third party EZ Keys content providers?

I'm not sure if 3rd party EZ Keys are an option and only have what Toontrack offers (which on the most part, are all quite good). Glyn, your best option might be to get a generic 6 pack (6 generic EZ Keys Midi licenses) which you can use at anytime. I can recommend getting the Gospel, Funk, Classic Soul, Boogie, Pop Rock, Blues, and R&B (listen to the demo's and see what strikes you). They are all quite versatile and not necessarily genre specific. Time & Space has the 6 pack for 55.95 (British pounds), but there may be better deals elsewhere. http://www.timespace.com/product/EZKEYSM6-1/toontrack_ezkeys_midi_6_pack_%28boxed%29.html

I do have a bunch of the Toontrack stuff, I bought one of those six packs already, I am just getting a feel for what else is out there. I have just had a play around with the demos from Piano Loop and they are pretty good and different from the Toontrack ones of a similar genre, certainly worth downloading as you get a reasonable amount of patterns for a free demo, and there is a demo fro each pack. Nothing on my "to buy" list for the time being. The loops are in MIDI format, not Toontracks propriatory format so you get the import options dialog when you drag them in from the browser. (the same as if you drag in a track from your DAW). It also looks like it is going to be pretty easy to use and organise my own loops using the folder templates from the Piano Loops stuff.

I have one of these Glyn. They are mapped for EZ Keys so there is no compatibility problem. They have a bit more content than the Toontrack midi IIRC. They aren't better or worse, just different. Will I buy anymore? Prob, but I'm not hot to do it. I like having something a bit diff just because it's diff. If you like everything the same you might not love them. Can't think of anything bad to say about them but not a lot of passion either way.

My thoughts exactly, daddy-o. Not jumping but still interested. Haven't gotten all those EZ packs yet, so they are first in line.

Do third party loops work well with the "use browser midi" button ? I do a lot of basic chord progression and then re-do them with "use browser midi" function. I am wondering what happens to a third party loop if you "use browser midi" JR

I went and downloaded the freebies from piano loops .com and they work pretty much the same as EZkeys midis. Quite nice. JR

I had bought a few of them during a sale. Pop 1 & 2 and Rnb Ballads. The Rnb Ballads does not seem very RnB to me, but I might find some useful. The other sounded okay. Comparable to the EZ packs. A couple of the tracks sounded like One Republic or The Fray, so I guess if you are really into that sort of thing, you may be in luck. Another one sounded kind of Sara Bareilles like.

Any thoughts on AOR? The description sounds like Steely Dan and Doobie Bros, but the demos sound more Christopher Cross.

Any piano performance in MIDI format will do. You just need to drag and drop the midi file onto EZKeys song frame. You can even use drum midis or anything else and get interesting results. Setting a harmony in EZK is no rocket science.

Yes they do, as you have found out It works with any MIDI if you emulte the folder structure used by Piano Loops. So you can use your own patterns and apply them to your chord sequence. I have started putting together some organ patterns from various song fragments I have created in the hope of developing them further. I am also going to dig out the old "Twiddly Bits" MIDI files I bought a hundred years ago! I am suprised someone like Groove Monkee have not got in on the act yet. I like Soundwise's idea of using drum loops, I will be giving that a try!

I have only had a quick run through this one. I have a feeling it will be one of the more useful. I think you just need to get creative with some of these loops and use them out of context, radically different chord sequence and tempo for example. I am loving the 70's Progressive pack, but that is quite genre specfic (but its a very wide reaching genre). I use a Yes style "Roundaboutish" pattern ove a Tarkus style chord sequence for example and it sounded totally unlike either, and rather wonderful.

I don't have AOR (yet), but I'm planning on getting it with a generic 6 pack......there are others that I'd like to have as well. Glyn has the gist of it when using these loops.....you just have get creative and it's EZ to mix/mash them up in getting something very good. I'm also planning on watching more of those Groove 3 vids on EZ Keys so I can learn to make better use of all these excellent Midi Packs. Thanks for the Piano Loops link.....I installed the demo version and there's a lot of useful stuff in there.

Glyn said a few important things. Don't think you could only use a midi pack for the genre it's named after. MOST the midi packs are not that genre specific. You would do yourself a disservice and hamstring your creativity by only using the R & B pack on R & B. The Latin and Boogie packs are good examples of more genre specific packs. And what Glyn said about the 70's Prog pack is where the real fun and creativity can happen. The Gospel pack still surprises me that it sounds good on so many different styles. As a guitar player and a "one hand wonder" on the keys this software gives me a non guitar look at things and for a songwriter that is so valuable. If you're doing the right things and you get stuck, do something wrong. Now I don't mean wearing your wife's pearls in the shower, like Fleer does, I mean put a Gospel piano on your Indie song. The Gospel pack still

After re-reading this thread, I was wondering about them too. I don't think I got them when they were available.
But I have to wonder why not many other third party expansion packs are not available for EZ Keys.

Here's 2 good sources for other midi files: Funk, soul, jazz (and of course these can be used for anything): http://www.smashupthestudio.com/I would tell you to only buy these when they are on sale (like right now they are 20% off). Classical midi files - you can get about 19,000 classical midi files for about $45! Take a Bartok melody and put a funky drum kit behind it and you're on your way to something interesting... lots of material to play with! http://www.kunstderfuge.com/
