Piano Roll Oddity [Solved by X3e Update]
Just upgraded from 7 Pro to X3 Pro a week ago. I must have switched something inadvertently because suddenly my piano roll is operating funny. All that's changed is that instead of opening the piano roll to the NOW time (is it still called that?) it opens to the beginning of the song. It briefly flashes the NOW time before resetting. A possibly related issue - at about the same time my main track view stopped scrolling with playback. Now the cursor just scrolls off the screen. When I stop playback the track view will catch up, but I gotta believe that I accidentally switched something because all my quick keys are different (can't tell you how many times I turned things on and off with "s", "e", "d" and "b" in the piano roll before I got used to the F5-F10 keys.) Any ideas? Thanks, Rob

The scrolling issue could be the scroll lock key. Also scrolling will stop if a note is edited during playback, to resume scrolling in this case, right click in the time line. Hitting old keyboard shortcuts is going to really mess with productivity. If you cannot break the old muscle memory consider creating custom keyboard bindings to work the way you remember and set new troublesome bindings to "Do Nothing".

CTRL W toggles between- Return to last start point, and stop at now time. I use this a lot. When editing I need to stop at now, When punching in I want to return to my pre roll spot. The scrolling will stop following the song if you click to edit a track. It will resume if you left click again anywhere on the track view pane. This all becomes so automatic you won't even think about it.

Great tips - thanks, friends! I can't remember if Ctrl-W was anything in 7, but I might have hit is accidentally. I have to say that even with the hiccups, my switch to X3 has been pretty painless and I'm really jazzed about the new features!

Okay, the scrolling feature is fixed, but the piano roll is still defaulting to measure 1 rather than the NOW time.

Ctrl+W on most Windows applications closes the "focused" window, so beware.

You may need to provide more detail. I have been unable to replicate the issue. Does it happen with a new project? How is the piano roll being opened?

Hey, everyone, I just wanted to let you know that I discovered that when I upgraded to X3 from 7, I wasn't automatically given the latest patch. So, I downloaded and installed X3E and that has solved all my problems, including one I hadn't mentioned - how to "bring clips to the front" so that the endpoint of an overlapped clip is not always behind the second clip. Now clicking on a clip brings it to the foreground so both edges can be slip-edited. Thanks for all the help!

That's a good point. Glad to hear everything is working now.

Are you talking Track View Clips or PRV note blobs? I've always seen where TV clips can be moved to the front when selecting them, but the PRV blobs have always been a contention of mine. They don't actually move to the front but once the underlapped note is selected, you can hover over the overlapped note and the end of the underlapped note will allow itself to be grabbed. It would just be so much nicer if the whole blob would move to the front so you're not hassling with it. Perhaps a feature request?

It would be better if blobs could be defaulted to never overlap at all, with an option to allow it if you want. It makes no musical sense most of the time to allow a repeated note on message without a corresponding note off. (Having written that I'm sure there'll be hundreds of replies stating why you would want it!) If you try to do that on a real keyboard it is impossible, you have to release the key (note off) in order to press it again... if you need the notes to continue ringing you use the sustain pedal, for which there is a midi CC number. The only example I can think of would be to try to fake the sound of multiple cymbals by triggering the sound several times without cutting off the first ones. But this is going OT.

Whoever updated the thread title - thank you. I was talking about the clips in the track window. I was used to being able to click on a clip and edit both ends. I was having issues with the overlapping clip not dropping behind so I couldn't edit. That was fixed by the X3E update. Also, Mekashi is right, MIDI notes should not be able to overlap by default, with overlapping behavior only turned on by a switch, or something.
