Pianoteq

I'd like to use Pianoteq as a VST plugin with Sonar 6 Studipo, but I can't find how to do it. Pianoteq's support said it is easy but wouldn't tell me how to do it (not very helpul). Anyone any ideas?

Use the Synth rack. Insert soft synths and you'll see it listed.

I don't know the plug-in but it sounds like it is installed in a Directory/Path where Sonar doesn't look for it - you can make Sonar look in more than one Directory by:
    1. Start Sonar
    2. Choose menu Tools->Cakewalk Plug-in Manager
When it finally starts (depending on how many plug-ins you have installed):
    3. Click the button named Options in the "VST Configuration" section
    In the new window:
    4. Click the button named Add... to add a Directory (root) where Sonar should look for other VSTs.
    5. Click the button named OK - and again OK all the way out.

Mind that if the plug-in somehow messed up when being registered it may be marked as excluded - you can also use the Cakewalk Plug-in Manager to check and perhaps correct this.

Another option could be to uninstall the plug-in and re-install it somewhere in the directory where Sonar is currently looking for VST plug-ins.

    Hope it helps!

I installed the program then reopened Sonar. I went to my synth rack and it was there. I'm not using it as a VST effect but calling it up as a Soft Synth. It worked fine for me. I don't know what else to say.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I followed them exactly, but still Pianoteq doesn't show up. It runs stand-alone quite happily, and I've double-checked the path. Other VST plugins work OK.

I wonder if it is because it's the demo-version of Pianoteq (which asn't expired yet)? Don't see why that should make any difference though.

No, it isn't a demo issue. I am also playing with the demo, and works fine here in Sonar 7 studio.

I notice that the folders to which Cakewalk points for its VST plugins all contain .dll files. Pianoteq on the other hand is a .exe file. Could this be anything to do with it?

are yes. the .exe is a program file and is the standalone or installation file...

edit - my pianoteq.dll is in a folder called, erm, pianoteq in the vst folder...

Sorted! It seems the Pianoteq install program hadn't installed the .dll file. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, and now Sonar can use it. Thanks for the help. Now my next quest is to achieve the same thing with Sibelius 5, which still can't see it...

    Hi Richard,

I'm glad it worked out for you - all the funny quirks when getting into Computer-based-music eh?

Well - hang in there - it's definately worth it!

Yes, copied the DLL file to the Sibelius folder, and all is OK. Thanks for help. Now I just have to persuade the wife that I need to buy Pianoteq, but I guess the forum can't help there ...
