Pickup held MIDI notes...

Hi again!

I thought I asked this weeks and weeks ago but never got an answer.

Is there an option in Sonar to pickup held MIDI notes? I'm working on a 1-hour meditation CD, so the music I'm composing is basically two chords held down for 30 sec each!! I really really really really really really really really don't want to start at the top of an hour-long project to hear my playback.

Where is the option to enable picking up midi notes>?

I can't find the option...PLEASE tell me it's available? It seems like Cakewalk doesn't want me to use Sonar to write this music..

please oh please don't send me back to Steinberg-land...

    There isn't one.
    Sonar doesn't do it.

If those half minute notes are static, not-changing sounds, a workaround would be to use Sonar 7's new handy note-split and glue features. First, cut them into shorter parts while working with the project, then, when everything is ready, glue them together again before the final mix.

Wouldn't another work-around simply be to freeze the synth track?

Yes, that's probably the best solution, assuming that the synths are freezable, that is: that they are soft synths. If not, they can be manually recorded into audio tracks, replacing the midi tracks at least temporarily during the work process.

The freezing synths is a decent workaround unless as sometimes is the case with me you are editing envelopes on the synth track and another track so that they are complimentary.
I often work on 2 tracks' filter cutoffs at the same time so that the interaction between the 2 sounds works and picking up on midi notes/data would most definitely speed up the work flow.

I think splitting the notes is the best way so far....since I'm still composing and need to play back what I've recorded once-in-a-while.

ie: record 12 bars, playback from bar 2, then record another 12 bars, playback from bar 14, etc...so freezing and unfreezing/re-recording might take a long time.

    I'll try splitting the notes....

(or using Cubase to compose this song...since it has the option.)

You could open the piano roll view and use the scrubbing tool ( B )...if for example you want to just cue a chord.I know it's not what you're asking about but it's a work around for editing purposes.
