Platinum Audio engine going south Win10 - Not playing well with RME UFX
I don't know if this is an issue with the SONAR upgrade or me going to Win10. If I leave a project sitting idle after playing it briefly, the audio engine does not play anything even though the meters are moving. I reset the icon for the audio engine and it works again. Anyone else having this issue?

I've had a similar symptom ever since moving to Win 10. All audio goes silent, not just SONAR. It doesn't happen often, perhaps once a week or less, but it's most likely to occur after the machine has been idle or asleep. I didn't have this issue prior to W10. I've been blaming it on the interface or its driver. I do not use the same interface as you, but like yours it is a Firewire connection. I have a simple workaround. When it happens, I change my ASIO buffer size. Doesn't matter what I change it to, the point is to force the interface and/or driver to re-initialize. Sound always comes back immediately and I don't need to restart any applications.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

thanks for replying - I just updated my signature, I am using the USB drivers. It is 100% everytime I stop playback and let it sit idle. It was fine before Win10. Ugh...

It is definitely Win10. Reverted back to Win8 and no issue with the audio engine sitting idle.

I've been seeing this occasionally with the RME UFX. It seems like after the system has suspended and resumed the driver won't emit audio. I close and restart SONAR and it plays again. It actually happened to me today. You could try contacting RME about it. I don't think SONAR is in the equation since our meters are showing activity and audio is streaming as normal.

I have not seen this. However I can't recall leaving my audio system on for lengthly periods of time at idle. My system is set up with audio and MIDI on when I turn on my overall audio and MIDI system. its all on a single switch. The computer is independent of this. I do know that Windows 10 has power modes that are not ideal for audio. Be sure you set up your Windows 10 to not go to sleep or cut off USB after an idle time. Win 10 is meant to run on tablets and laptops as well as desktops. Right now I have my desktop set to never go to sleep. Also be sure you disable core parking. Further because Windows is always updating you may need to check these settings from time to time. Most settings are in the settings/system but there are settings you will need to goto in devices in control panel. I'm not sure this will solve the problem but it can't hurt to try.

When I see the issue, I only leave it for about 3-5 mins. The audio engine needs to be reset every time in Win10. I will checkout RME support Noel. As Dave mentioned, it happens to him after moving to Win10 too.

Just talked to the Synthax support. They have zero reports of this issue. I updated the drivers and firmware to the Feb release so everything is up to date and I am still having the issue. Is there anything from a SONAR pov that I can do to help them understand the issue? If I can't get this worked out, I am going back to win8 again.

additionally, just had this happen. After the audio engine has been active for 30 mins, the audio is getting distorted now. Playback is horribly distorted. It is as if the buffers are getting hammered or something. The ASIO buffers are set to 128 which has zero issues in Win8. Resetting the audio engine resolves that too. The meters in the TotalMix are working fine. RME doesn't think it is a UFX problem. This is a definite Win10 problem though. Now SONAR or RME - how am I gonna try that out? Again, works fine in Win8.

just tried the power settings to performance in Win10. Deleted the AUD.ini, but didn't see any reprofiling. Audio still distorts and then fails to play. The meters still work in SONAR, but TotalMix is not showing any audio activity.

Definitely not happening here on Win 10 with my little Saffire 6 USB. I have left this system running unattended for hours, come back, press play and it plays instantly.

Noel, this does not happen like a flick of a switch. This seems to get the audio buffers corrupted over a minute or so. I was playing the file, got some distortion and the distortion got worse until there was no audio. Any other suggestions?

I tried leaving an audio clip sitting in Sound Forge and I did not experience the distortion or missing audio. I let it set for 5 hours without issue.
How can I say this is not a SONAR/RME issue? I don't think I can at this point. Running the test with X3 now.

Before you mentioned that after 5 min you had the problem. This is not something I have heard about or seen. You have Win 10 is it Windows Pro 64 bit? You may want to say what build you're using. Also what driver are you using ASIO or WDM? try using a different one. Play with your buffers settings too. This has to be highly frustrating for you and wish I had an easy answer.

Thx John. It is a 64-bit standard version and ASIO drivers. WDM doesn't work for my UFX. Just let X3 sit for a couple hours and not exhibiting the issue in X3. This looks like a SONAR Platinum issue with RME and Win10 64bit. Whatever the default update version of Win10 is.

Conley, I'm not home and have no access to a win10 computer where I am, but I had a problem such as yours, and I changed a setting in the advanced power area that controlled power to USB ports ? It was timing out after 120secs or something like that. I can't remember exactly what the path was, or how you get to it without a machine in front of me, but it fixed my issue, which was after a substantial win10 update about 6weeks ago?? Maybe someone else can tell you exactly what this setting is. I won't be home for a few days. Cheers - Dave.

I am going back to windows 8 because SONAR doesn't handle this audio engine thing very well in Win10 on my machine. RME says nothing is wrong because the driver works in other hosts and other versions of SONAR. It is a platinum specific issue.

If you hit 'E' on your computer keyboard, to toggle the bypassing of all loaded effects plugins, does the issue go away? If so, then one or more plugins are causing the issues. (hit 'E' again to toggle effects back on). Also, can you please detail which plugins you have loaded into a project that is having these issues? Sometimes folks accidentally load a plug into a project that is meant to be used during mixing, when they are still recording, and issues result. (when mixing, the ASIO Buffer Size can be adjusted way high, which allows consumptive plugins to be used, but too much latency occurs to do so during tracking/recording). Bob Bone

I just wanted to report in here and say that it doesn't happen at all with my UCX (also over USB, latest drivers), Sonar Platinum 64-bit and Win 10. I do always make sure to plug my UCX into the same USB2 port (my computer has USB3 too and they do say it's supported, but still). I don't even have the very newest of laptops (quad core i7 2670 at 2.2GHz) but I can run most projects continuously at 64 samples. I know it's not an UFX but it seems close to it in hardware and drivers.
It's been rock solid so far. Only Melodyne related crashes here, as usual.

I have had this happen to me with an LS 56, latest focusrite drivers and ........ W10.
It also happens when Sonar is not open but the machine has been idle for some time.
I need to check my power settings again, i have also heard that W10 updates revert certain settings back to default.

FWIW, Running a Fireface UFX with Win10 here... with no such symptoms. First, make sure all power-management is disabled (including USB selective suspend). Also, go into Device Manager and disable power-management for each USB Root Hub.

I'm using RME UCX, sonar platinum x64, Windows 10.
The only time I have interruptions with mouse, USB hub, or interface seem to be related to update installations.
It would make sense that when idle Windows may attempt an update if update services are running. This could interrupt the RME.
If someone has a pc where the install was repeatedly being attempted and failing, it could maybe cause this case... ?
So, if you check the logs... application... For errors after the problem, do you find anything? Right click my computer choose manage and find the Windows logs. They take a minute to populate.

It doesn't happen at all with my UFX, Sonar Platinum 64-bit and Win 10 64bit Pro (with all latest Win 10 updates).

Hi. I am running a RME Ucx, latest drivers (USB), latest firmware, latest SONAR and Win10 X64 (fully up to date). I do not have any problems with the audio engine cutting out when leaving SONAR for hours, or even overnight. All the best.
