Platinum Users, please tell me about the amp sims

I'm curious why Cake keeps dumping their 3rd party amp sims. Now they have a new amp sim(s) in platinum. Are they better than any of the previous offerings?

Regards, John

ya, the amp sim is still the same. not sure what gave you that impression other than
possibly you may have confused Craig Anderton's new presets for FX chains as new Amp sims.

Windows 8.1 X64 Sonar Platinum x64
Custom built: Asrock z97 1150 - Intel I7 4790k - 16GB corsair DDR3 1600 - PNY SSD 220GB

Unfortunately, I think they included the prototype amps and not the final versions I sent them. They're checking into it now. If they are the prototypes, the new versions will be updated...well, real soon. Maybe even tomorrow! So please don't evaluate them critically yet...although the prototypes sounded sufficiently good for Cakewalk to want to include them.

Well, if that's true then I can't wait to hear 'em cause I've been having a freakin' blast playing with the current ones. Thanks, Craig! Awesome job.

Unfortunately, I've confirmed that they are the prototype amp sims, not the versions with some of the additional IP built in. I'm glad you're digging 'em, but CW should have the real ones ready to install soon.

Is this a new plugin or presets to TH2? Do they incorporate the pre and post eq strategy that have been in previous Anderton guitar amp modeling tips?

The final versions are a really complex collection of stuff that embody what I've written about in my various articles, FX Chains, multiple existing plug-ins, but perhaps most importantly, also incorporates proprietary IP that was used in the development for Gibson's FBX guitar.

They're sounding (and looking) good so far on my end.  Nice variety and good choice of controls.   I did have one weird case where I inserted the Jazz amp after trying the other Clean variations and had some static-y noise that wouldn't go away until I stopped/started the audio engine.  But that didn't happen again.  Perhaps it could be related to being prototypes?    FWIW the Jazz sim does remind me of the Roland Jazz Chorus, which I do like.

Anyhow..   they all sound good here.  Hard to tell whether they'll wind up as replacements for GR5 or Revalver 4, but I can already tell I'll be using delivered FX Chains more than ever before.   So if this is an example of the "content" referred to as part of the new Membership program, then count me in!

That's one of the problems. The other is you insert the amp and it sounds like crap, with high frequencies that won't quit. It seems closing SONAR, re-opening, then re-inserting the effect can provide a workaround in some cases. I'll try your audio engine trick if it happens again.

I highly recommend NOT using the amps for serious projects yet because there may be some differences in the sound when the final ones arrive. For example one effect loads with different control settings than what I programmed.

Part of the goal is to make these amps "drag and drop" so you get close to the sound you want within seconds, and then maybe you do a few tweaks. Remember, these are designed to complement what's out there, not replace the "photo-realistic" sims of individual amps...no need to re-invent the wheel. That said, I don't use other amp sims any more.

And yes, this is absolutely representative of the type of content you'll be receiving. The Amps and Anderton Collection are the start, not the end, nor am I the only person working on these kinds of things. I came up with a new genre of effects for SONAR that I figured would be in X4, but the Cakewalk guys took one look and said "whoa...we could take this concept in an even better direction," which they're in the process of doing. It looks like they'll be done in March or maybe April.

Hello everyone, and good morning!

I was just curious if anyone happens to know if the proper version of these FX chains/amp simulations will be available when everything is finally released on the 21st? I'm really interested in trying these out when the new line is finally here for everyone, but don't want to get myself sold on a sound with the chance of that sound changing soon after.

Thanks for your time!

Thanks for confirming!  I figured that might be the case given the prototype status, but best to know for sure.  I suppose this is just part of being on the cutting edge.

Excellent!  The SONAR "sound buffet" is getting a major (and very useful) expansion.   Love it.

Also curious if the future March/April versions will be for every platform or just Platinum.

Originally, SONAR was supposed to go on sale by a specific date. However to shake out any potential show-stopper bugs, it was decided to release the program early to a small number of people to make sure everything worked smoothly. The final amp sims were supposed to go in before the on sale date; the older versions were still in the installer, and no one caught it due to the last minute nature of the change (my being occupied with CES and its aftermath didn't help in terms of my checking up on the status).

Also curious if the future March/April versions will be for every platform or just Platinum.

From the FAQ:

SONAR Artist, professional, and Platinum each have a different monthly cost. Does that mean they each get different product features and content with Membership?

Yes. During a 12-month Membership all versions receive multiple product and content updates, however SONAR Professional Members will have additional features and content, and SONAR Platinum Members will get the most new features and content.

Bear in mind that for example Platinum has more stuff. Therefore by definition, something like extra presets for a processor that's only in Platinum while only go to members who have Platinum. Something that works across all versions go to everyone.

I did not get this but I already had AD2 from X3PE, I believe XLN currently are giving away Peavy revalver with an AD2 purchase.

EDIT if you dont see the pop up go log into XLNs site and you will have a nice link for revalver waiting for you :D

I tested the final amp sims with Platinum just to make sure, and sent them off. I believe they will be part of the final release. They are being moved from the core installer to a separate installer (like some of the other effects), because more amps are forthcoming and they don't want to make changes to the core installer every time I send them something new. The next one will be an acoustic guitar amp.

You lucked out then, there are some compatibility issues so the sound may be close to what was intended. However I think you'll find the final versions an improvement. One big change you'll notice is that in a couple clean amps, the reverb sounds much more like the spring reverb it's supposed to sound like. Also the vibrato in the Sparkle amp is much better...lots of little things like that.

Hello Anderton!

Thanks for your response, I appreciate it!
Also thanks for the information, if they aren't, it's not a deal-breaker for me. I suppose that they would just be a kind of cherry on top of a rather tasty cake (if you like cherries on top of your cake, of course!)
Now, to wait in anticipation for Wednesday.

Take care!

Ok this might be a silly question, but...

How do these compare to, say, AmpliTube? Is it time that we can switch over to "what's in the box"? I haven't played enough with these to know, and I don't have the new Sonar yet so can't test the latest. Are people finding they still need something like AmpliTube or similar 3rd party plugins?

I find the more I can stick with what comes in the box, the easier it is to maintain my DAW environment. Hate to have other companies lose our business but they need to keep enticing us if they want to stay ahead of the game.
