Play CDs on My DAW Machine with ARC Enabled?

I'm looking for a way to play CDs on my DAW machine with ARC enabled on the output (and/or maybe some other VSTs like a sepctrum analyzer).  I've done some web searching but the information I find is either pretty old or rather dodgy.  I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and most of my VSTs are 64-bit.  Sonar X1 64-bit is my main VST host, but I also use Cantabile for this purpose.

There seems to be two possible approaches.  One is a media player that can host VSTs.  The other is a VST that is a media player (all I care about are ordinary CDs, however).  What I don't want to have to do is to first rip the CDs to wave files.  I just want to load a CD into the computer and press play.

Does anyone have any recent experience doing this, and if so, what software are you using?  It doesn't have to be free, and I'm willing to invest in jbridge if that turns out to be needed.

Thanks.

I use foobar2000 media player http://www.foobar2000.org/ with the VST adapter: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio...Components/VST_adapter

It can be a little tricky to set up, but if you run into problems we're here to help :)

This is why I use external hardware for room EQ.

Thanks, I'll definitely check it out.  Let me ask in advance.  I'm assuiming foobar2000 and its VST adapter is 32-bit.  Will I be able to use jbridge to hook it up to ARC, or will I need to have both the 32 and 64-bit ARC VSTs installed on my DAW?

Yes, foobar2000 and the VST adapter are 32 bit only. I've never dealt with jbridge so sorry I can't help you there.

My KRK Ergo avoids this issue.

Never thought about that before, but now I see it is a bonus for the Ergo.

I use Winamp, and it too has a VST adapter.  There is a link on one of Danny D.'s posts about ARC.  It works perfectly.

Thanks.  Here's the link to that thread (I think it's the one to which your referring):

Danny's post is, as usual, easy to spot.  It's the really long one.

I'm using WinAmp as well but have always wondered if there was a way to use ARC when viewing Youtube or other streaming content.  Anyone have a solution for that?

To view YouTube et.al. through ARC, one way is to have a soundcard with good multiclient drivers and run a loopback cable from an output back to an input. Then live monitor the signal in Sonar through ARC. If you can keep your latency low, you might not even notice the delay. The RME hardware is capable of this.

Another way would be to set up a dedicated PC and use it as your ARC equalizer. Have it always running its inputs through ARC then out to your speakers. Use a good low-latency audio interface.

That's my long way of saying that there's no easy way. Just a lot of complicated kludgy ones.

Or...spend the same amount of money (or less) on an inexpensive parametric equalizer (a real one) and place it between your audio interface and your active monitors. This solves multiple problems:

    1. The correction can be always on regardless of what software you're using

    2. The correction can be easily turned off when necessary

    3. You never have to worry about bypassing the correction before exporting

    4. It introduces zero overhead for your computer

    There are a few limitations:

    1. It's harder to switch between alternate speakers without a switcher

    2. Hardware takes up space on a desktop or in a rack

    3. You can only EQ for the primary listening position

Actually, that last one applies to ARC, too. They just don't like to talk about it.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Great idea's, Steve.  Got me thinking and I went a slight different route.  I have a Line 6 Gear Box USB soundcard that set up as the main audio drivers.  I took the audio out from it and plugged back into my VS-700.  Running it through Sonar with ARC on (input monitoring enabled) and it works.  Thanks!
