Playback while recording

I imagine there'll be a simple answer to this one.

Just upgraded to X3.

Building up say on a session drummer track. If I try to over dub cymbals or whatever I lose the sound of the original recorded track, and have no track playing back while recording. This is happening on any soft synth track. I've tried the input echo on and off. Any ideas guys??

Cheers

If you're recording takes from a controller try changing record mode from "comp" to "sound on sound".

Yea, you have your settings to "replace old with new" tKx5050 has it right. Sound on sound is what you need. I also wanted to add that you should select mute previous takes if you are loop recording.

Because I want each drum part in it's own track I simply insert a new midi track and bang away.
Just point it's output at the same synth.
I find editing easier if each part has it's own track, it also makes it simple to assign it to a different drummer if I need too later.

Everyone has a different style, but I always have sound on sound ON when recording MIDI and OFF when recording vocals/audio.  The reason is that I build up MIDI tracks but punch in audio, so I have to change this when moving from MIDI to vocals..  (I don't like lanes.  I punch in if something is really bad;  otherwise, I use separate tracks for multiple takes.)
