Playing back 24 bit on 16 bit card

Hello -- I have a USB 16/24 bit box for recording with my laptop. I usually only attach it when recording and use the internal sound card for play back when travelling or when I don't want to be bothered attaching all the cables.

The other day I recorded some tracks in 24 bit which worked fine but a few days latter I loaded the project (without the high quality external box) and forgetting it was 24 bit hit the play button. It played back fine although the internal card is only 16 bit. Anyone know what is happening here? With a previous laptop, if I did that, all I would get was silence. Does that mean this internal card must have a 24 bit mode? I was pretty sure that it did not have one. It is a Conexant AC-Link Audio.

Thanks

Michael

    Try convert to 16 bit in SONAR. I playing 24 bit projects on my laptop well when I don't have my EDIROL UA1000. {nForce3 chipset}
