Please Help; Playing using Tyros4

Hello,

I'm new to cakewalk, and looking for some guidance.

Recently purchased tyros4 and sonar7; and m-audio box.  I have tyros connected via midi to m-audio, and m-audio connected to computer via usb.

When I play something, it does play, but with plain sounds, it does not play with effects or super articulation sounds...  What am I doing wrong?

If there is section on this, or any other sections for a newbie, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

    Welcome to the forum!
How are you monitoring? Using the connections you described, if the sound comes through Tyros' loudspeakers, then you must study the Tyros manual to solve the problem (ie. if you hear the Tyros' sounds live and send only the MIDI to SONAR without output back to Tyros).

If you are monitoring through loudspeakers/headphones connected to M-Audio, and the signal goes through SONAR, it's another story.
MIDI includes no sound, it's only data. So the MIDI you send to SONAR is played by the standard GM-midi sounds unless you have inserted a soft synth.

Also, if you output the MIDI from SONAR-track back to Tyros (ie you have connected both MIDI in & out cables) in order to hear the MIDI played with Tyros'  sounds, it's the Tyros'  manual where you have to look for how to make Tyros' FX audible.

Basicly, if you want to record the Tyros' sounds, you must connect it to M-Audio with audio cables, as MIDI-connection can not transmit sounds of any kind.

I recommend you do the tutorials concerning MIDI/soft synths that are in the Help-files.

BTW, it would be useful to know which version of SONAR you are actually using (SONAR 7 Studio or Producer haven't been
available for several years, the present line is the X1).

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Hi and thank you for your reply.

I have solved some of the problems.  I have Tyros connected directly to my computer (via usb), and connected monitor speakers into outputs of keyboard.  I'm able to play back tyros sounds, but for some reason, while playing or recording, voices are not 100% correct, but on play back of recording, they are as they should be... Any ideas?

I'm using Sonar7 Producer; also, I'm confused on how to assign different voicing to different tracks.  I see selections of bank, and sound names under Patch, but that does not make any difference when changing... I know I'm doing something wrong.. but what.

    Thanks in advance,

    Andy

If what you want is the sounds from within the Tyros then you have to do as Kalle said above and patch the audio outputs via the M box to your computer. This is then recorded in a audio track. There's a better way  however and that's to record the MIDI first and then either use a soft synth or route the data back to the keyboard and then record it. This allows you to take advantage of the hundreds of editing feature of the software.

There is no sound transmitted over MIDI.

I think what is happening is you are hearing your on board sound card MS wave synth. This is the only explaination I can see that would explain hearing different sounds.

All the info on how to set up is in the help files but I agree it is a little bit much for first time users to wade through.

First you need to make sure you have set Sonar running right.

Most important of all is make sure you install the latest and the correct drivers for the M box I repeat - Most important!
Go to Sonars audio options and check that you are in ASIO mode and that the M box is your audio device.
Go to MIDI options and either choose the M box MIDI in/ out or the Tyros USB in/outs. Both will work the same.
Most Keyboards USB connection is for MIDI only and does not transmit any sound. If it does transmit sound then the Tyros would be an audio interface and you cannot have 2 interfaces connected at the same time.

You monitors should be plugged into the M box . Not your keyboard.
Otherwise you will not hear anything else you record .

You can use outboard MIDI hardware to play sound but you should try the many built in "soft synths" first. Every possible synth is available and this is the way most of us work. The only reason to choose an outboard hardware synth is when a certain sound is required that cannot be matched by a soft synth. This is rare.

    So lets try one out:
The TTS-1 for starters. It is a GM 16 channel synth and uses all the standard sounds.
Go to views / synth rack/ there's a drop down to choose which synth.
Each synth has a GUI interface were you can customize millions of settings. Read the tutorial for details.

Now insert a MIDI track and assign it's output to the TTS-1.

If your keyboard is transmitting MIDI you will now hear , a piano, the default patch. All the GM sounds can be selected in the properties box.

You can now record that track.
If more sounds and tracks  are needed you will have to use other channels.

I just looked the Tryos up and I see it is a workstation. Seems you could record audio into it. It is a stand alone recording system. You wil have to make up your mind on which way to go. Do all your recording with the Tyros, Or use Sonar ( more powerful) .

It is not a audio interface as in it cannot transmit live audio via USB.
The USB connection can be used to swap WAVE and MP3 files.
This would not be directly to Sonar, It would work same as any USB storage device.
Be warned, your sequences created in the Tyros do not transmit over MIDI.
If you create a song on the Tyros, you will have to use it as an audio file.
The live audio output  would be recorded.
Or save the finished song as a WAVE and import it via USB.

    Hi Andy

I also use a T4! heres what I do, connect the T4s L/R R output to the main input on your Audio interface and then also connect 2 midi cables midi in on T4 to Midi out on interface and Midi in on T4 to Midi out on your audio interface, that way anything you record into the T4 will be heard through Sonar also check out the link below (hope it works...) you will need this to make sure your SA voices get heard right! although I'm not sure they will be represented just as good as they would when playing live, but one last thing, what I do sometimes is, record my song into the T4 then midi the kbd up and treat your recorded song (i mean midi not the audio recorder by the way) as a midi file copy it on to a usb pen and put it on your hard drive of our computer and you can hear/edit it that way, anyway hope you get on okay T4 is a class keyboard!!
