Please Help!! Trying to use Yamaha Promix as Controller-X1

Hello,
I am trying to get this Promix to work as a controler in X1 64. It seems the promix does not support the Mackie protocal. I have the midi in and out cables hooked up. It is not listed as a control surface, nor is it in the ACT listing. So do I need to set this up as an ACT control surface? I have been trying, but its not working. I can get the promis to move faders in sonar, but when I move the fader with the mouse, it does not move it on the promix.. Also, when I try to learn the faders in the ACT panel, channels one works fine, but for all other 15 faders, they all controll each other, in other words, channel 2 fader controls channel 2-16, so does channel 3, 4 and so on. Any help would be appreciated, I am pulling my hair out.

It might be worth hooking up MIDI-OX to the input and seeing what the Promix is sending.  You may need to tweak its configuration.

I don't know if the Promix is sending CC signals or NRPN.  I have the old Cakewalk StudioMix surface and it uses NRPNs (you can get a much higher resolution).

I took a look at a manual that I found here: http://allstarsystems.net/manuals/PROMIX01E1.pdf (last appendix), and one thing that I think you will need to do is change the mode to register mode.  I don't know how ACT will react to receiving data on multiple channels.

That said, I don't know if the ACT MIDI Controller can accept NRPNs, but there's a Generic Surface which will. It's fairly ugly, but it might at least get the inputs working.

Unfortunately, I am not sure if either of these two will send messages to motorized faders.

thanks Andy, Im not at all knowledgeable on this stuff. I did see the register mode on the promix while fooling around with it. I will try that tonight. I have seen a youtube video of the "flying faders" working with a DAW, but it wasnt sonar. Im hoping if it works with others, it will work with sonar. By generic, are you talking about the generic surface that is actualy listed in the control surface box on sonar? Thanks again for the info.

You're welcome, glad I could help.  You are correct about the Generic Surface.

Unfortunately, I really don't know a whole lot about it other than the name and that it can address very flexibly.
