Please, Please, Please Give Us A Pad Based Drum Sample Player

Please create a pad based sample player that will allow one to:
  Stack sounds
Assign all controls to hardware controller
Allow user to scroll through sounds while a drum patter is playing
I don't want to have to stop the groove to change out drum samples
It does not need to have it's own sequencer
Let Sonar take care of that part. All it needs to do is play the samples
A way to erase bad hits (mistakes) without touching the mouse, keyboard or stopping the groove.

A lot of us don't make kits ahead of time. We just want hit record and start making beats. Having to stop the groove totally ruins the vibe. Please make an instrument that addresses that.

Here's a perfect example:
https://youtu.be/nWeIpLtSCDE

Thank you.

Yeah, I have Maschine. Bought it when it first came out. I guess I should have stated that in my first post.

Anyway, Maschine is nice. But it's workflow gets in my way. I always have to stop and "think" about how to do things. Also, I don't really do any chopping or looping of samples. I would like something ia lot more simple and intuitive. I've used GURU before and I'm checking out Geist. I also have Battery. Not quite as assignable as I'd like.

Thanks for trying to help.

Yeah, I know. It's a very basic tool. Which is why Sonar should come with one. There are tons of us who would really appreciate and use this kind of sample player.

I would like such a tool in Sonar, but if you are gagging for it and there is something that is 'perfect', it makes sense to me to just get that. I would like a Midi chord plug in, I use one, it's great, but I have ideas about how it could be better by incorporation new ideas and making it a really flexible and intuitive. I'd rather we ask for these type of developments, than duplicating what exists and can be easily added by just those users that need them.

Well, maybe my use  of "perfect" was a bit of an over reach. I the bakers could do a better job. Sonar needs something like this.

For me I'd rather they concentrate more or workflow and less on plugins. I can buy or download all the plugins I need, what I can't do is make the core app better.

I hear that from a few people. But, I've never had any problem with the work flow. It's always been very intuitive for me. But, to be fair, I'm very basic in my use of Sonar. I use it almost daily, but I don't get under the hood with all the bells and whistles. I know enough to be dangerous. ...lol

Now, the audio engine? That was a different story. But, even that seems to have been smoothed out.

I would like Sonar to plug the gaps in creating a rounded applications, and I think that a pad tool like this would help it, especially if they integrated it well, so taking sounds within a project and manipulate them further.

I don't think cake should 100% concentrate on workflow, and that included other extras will make it a more attractive package for new customers and increase income. The dance market is worth pulling in, and devices like this would help draw entice those new to DAW's into thinking that this could be the one for them.

I''m not even sure with how the development team is set up, whether it would be the same staff that would develop this as that would concentrate on workflow developements, since t seems the Midi guys lack the expertise to deal with the staff issues. They have recently employed guys to work on the synthasis side of the company,  and while it's not that either, I'd have thought they would need some of skills needed in setting up the non synth engine parts of a GUI.

I would be interested if this was included, but not enough to but a separate one at the moment.

We've had a similar thread about 3 months back, so I hope that the cakewalk team are not just looking at these threads but analysing them and see the interest in something.

Perhaps it could be managed by giving the virtual keyboard another GUI option along with the underneath programming to make it work. That might make it more feasible.

Have you gotten a chance to trial Geist? It also runs stand alone, and has all the features with drag/drop functionality throughout.

I only have 8 pads on my controller, but assume driving it with Maschine would be icing on the cake for you (pad response is locked by MIDI channel, so need to RTFM, as they are not "MIDI learn"... But most all else is).

you just don't have the right instrument. get Nerve. you'll be able to sync or layer all your other drum samplers with it. it's the best drum sequencer ever. cakewalk will never make anything as good, forget it.

GIEST is great. But, I'd like something a little more basic than that. Like, just the sample player. Other DAWS come with this kind of player and it's a bread and butter tool these days.

You guys know the matrix view in sonar?
Very easy to use, it can play one shot or loop samples, triggering with midi or mouse and seamless integrated.

And works well with touch screens.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Layering and dynamically altering them is a bit of a stretch for the Matrix View as is today. I think the OP is looking more to build/design a step sequencer pattern in real time, then adjust the sounds per pad. Matrix View can achieve these, but is not simple nor intuitive.

Thanks for the suggestion. But Matrix isn't quite there. It's too much of a "blunt instrument." No way to scroll through sounds and audition them in the track or easily pitch them up or down on the fly.

Anything that forces the user to stop the groove to find what he or she is looking won't cut it. Matrix could fit the bill, but it needs some serious tweaks to get it there.

Guys like myself need to be able to fly drums sound in and out on the fly. Layer them on the fly. Edit them on the fly with the twist of a knob or two. Etc ... All without stopping the groove and loosing the inspiration.

Again, this a bread and butter VSTi that a few other DAW's come with. It really is a no brainer. I'm not downing The Bakers. I love Sonar. Just pointing out something they have overlooked.

In what ways does Session Drummer not do this presently? This isn't a challenge I actually want to make the list.

Despite the view, SD is essentially "pad" based. But AFAIK it won't do the following:

Layering - I seem to recall you can edit the underlying kit file with a text editor to get layering functionality? But still, can't do it in the UI
Swapping samples in/out on the fly - AFAIK you need to stop transport to do this?
Erasing "bad" hits - okay that sounds pretty cool
I always use SD with a keyboard but can you not assign the notes to pads on a controller?
