Please Recomend a budget Mic's for Micing up guitar cabs ?

Hi all

Over the last 6 months of learning how to do some home recording Ive been doing all my guitar work DI useing things like my Vamp pros, Pod farm. guitar rig amplitube etc.

I think its about time I start to learn to mic up some of my cabs

Could any one help with a good starting point a budget Mic's to get started ?

This will be new to me so any help would be great!

My only other option is to buy a power soak / Hot plate and run any Heads straight into the Interface from that.

To me this would be a good way and still a way I can see eme going from time to time BUT that would be takeing the easy way out and I would really like to learn to mic up !

Ive heard just a good old SM58 would get the job done?

I have a Beta 58 so not sure if its up to the job I am not sure of the diference between the SM and the beta.

As you can see from my rambleing above I need help to get my head on track ;)

Thanks to all

Shure 57.  It is a standard, from home to world class studios.

A cheap ribbon.  Not as sure of a bet as a 57, but that might roll off some of the sharpness.

If your room sounds ok you could use a 57 and a ribbon farther away.  or a Large Diameter condensor.  I just recorded a mighty fine guitarist.  He used two amps cornered together and I stuck an Oktava 319 (an LDC) between them.  Sounded nice.  See my myspace (room101) or maybe it is at my soundclick in the sig to listen to it.  A 319 through a Portico II.

We used to use 57's and 58's all the time on stage for vocals and guitar cabs. I think even the drummer used 57's on most of his kit.

SHURE (57/58) is an all around good mic. I even used it in the studio for vox before I got the Rode....and in a pinch for time, will still grab it now.

I think I recorded the vox on Yeah Baby with the 58.

A tried and tested combo is an SM57 with a Sennheiser 421 off axis. You can get sooooooooooooooo many different sounds by mixing these 2 mics together. Enjoy!

I'll have three fingers of Glenlivet, with a little bit of pepper... and some cheese.

You can't do any better than a 57: it's cheap, incredibly durable, and also works extremely well on drums and male rock vocals. The 58 is identical except for the ball, which acts as a windscreen and makes it more suitable for vocals but more difficult to close-mic drums and speakers. There isn't a studio on the planet that doesn't have at least a couple 57's and/or 58's in the locker.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Hey guys thanks for the replys :)

So Could any one tel me the difference between the Beta 58 and th SM 58?

Ive been useing my Beta 58 and AKG Perception 220 for vocals but I am un sure if I can use the beta for Guitar aswell or should I go out and grab a SM58 ?

One other thing is I have seen this deal on a SE Ribbon Mic its down to £169 from £499 looks like a good buy but I am not sure http://www.dv247.com/micr...bbon-microphone--30188

I think I will jump on it and of course get a SM if you guys dont think the Beta will do the same job as the SM will..... What do you guys think ?

Thanks again for everything guys with out you all and this forum for over the last 6 months I would be tottaly lost and I cant thank you enough!

Another slight variation on the 57 theme is the Senn e609. It's about the same price and arguably easier sometimes to get into any position you want because of the flat design and side-address format. But I think that in overall sound terms it's probably quite similar. They both have a purposefully limited frequency range that suits rock/pop electric guitar nicely. Quite a few folks use the more upscale version the e906, which has a number of frequency response options as well that can make it kind of self-EQ'ing to a degree.

I actually also often use a Beyer M260 ribtton, which is kind of the little brother to the M160. It was originally designed for voice work, so it has a fairy steep rolloff below 150 and a bit of a presence peak. This often works really nicely for guitar parts that want to float more over the background. And since it's a ribbon, the presence peak doesn't come out as harsh.

A lot of people use the M160 on electric guitar, and have for decades, Hendrix for example. And it's one of the few (only?) cardoid ribbons out there, so it's great for project studios where you may want to miniimze room contribution.

And of course that's a big advantage of the dynamics mentioned above, they don't pick up much room at all.  Sometimes I'll try to mimic mic bleed and have the existing tracks playing on the monitors while I record a part. But a dynamic won't pick up squat from even five or six feet away if it's pointed away from the speakers. They just aren't that sensitive, but at the same time they don't need huge gain either.

The Beta has a slightly different frequency response and a little bit hotter output.

I don't own one but have used dozens and dozens of them. I just own the regular versions.

The Beta 58 is all anyone needs to be a rock star! If you already have one then there's little need to be redundant and get something so similar unless you need extra mics.

    best regards,
    mike

    Thanks Mike

So the Beta 58 wil get the job done ? :) Great news !

If I had knowen that I would have been trying to mic up my cabs before now :)

    Thanks again

    M160 is actually hyper-cardioid.

I've got a pair of them that get used all the time.  In fact, last night I used one as a room mic for a guitar cab.

Quite possibly my fav mic of all time....but not cheap.

I always use a 57 with a Senn e906 (like the 609 but with switchable settings).
You can get '57's for cheap on eBay, and when I had one go south on me, I sent it out to Shure and they sent me a brand new one for $50!
Good company that makes outstanding, timeless products.

I like the Beta 57 better than the original...better lock for the wind screen....so it won't give you that mystery chatter after a few years.

Norrie, that SE Electronics R1 mic was originally reviewd by SOS back in November 2006.

At that time it was retailing for £699!

If you haven't done so already, I'd snap one up before they all go - if they haven't already.

Bit of price gap there Mike - the Coles model retails for £750 new, about £600 s/h

For £300 you get TWO SE electronics R1, brand new.

I agree it's a better mic, but needs must & all that.

i've used a shure sm57 for the majority of my recorded tracks and live work, since about 1980.

but in the last 3 years, i've been recording electric almost exclusively with this:

I prefer the 58 over the 57 for miking cabs.  The 57 is just a tad too bright.

sm 57 for amps is 90% of the time the first mic i'll reach for.  i got my first one back in 93 and i'm still using it.  its went on the road as my cab mic.  ive had vox on it, drums you name it.  its been dropped, swung, threw, stepped on, ran over and its still kicking.  i've had to patch up loose connections a time or tow but thts simple too. long as you don't invert the phase.
$100 sm57,48  beats ANY $100 mic out there. its a true road mic able to handle years of playing on stage.  so in a studio it should last forever  lol

Phenom Quad core,  8gb ram, 3.5tb of Fine Music Storage Vault Under Armed Guard w/ UAV support (air-hog chopper), set of MA-15D, Delta 10-10 pci w/interface, m-box 3 pro, projectmix I/O, Metal Pop Filters, Two SKB cases Full of Suck Removal Buttons, Cedar Walls, Stripper Pole (helps with mastering & block priceing) more stuff i'm to lazy to add. ;)
P.S. good Memory foam is freakin awesome.

I would say try it.  If you're not happy with it, try something else.

Any one any thoughts on useing a Beta 58 ? or takeing the top of the Beta 58 and useing that ?

I have one I use for live vocals thats the reason I ask

Try the Beta 58, if you like it, than use it.
This question is like a lot like your other questions, there is no right or wrong answer.
Your asking for an opinion which everyone has.
    It's all subjective!
