Please check my math ...
My truck bed measures: 5' Wide x 5.5' Long x 1.5' Tall That equals: 41.25 Cubic Feet. Subtract for the wheel wells: 1' Wide x 2.5' Long x .5' Tall That equals: 1.25 Cubic Feet. 41.25 - 1.25 = 40 Cubic Feet. A cord of firewood is 128 Cubic Feet. How many truck loads of evenly stacked firewood, to the top of the bed, would it take to get 128 Cubic Feet of firewood (A full cord)? The answer I came up with is 3.2 truckloads, not 1 like I'm being told. Am I missing something here? I'd like to know how an area that holds 40 Cubic Feet magically can handle 128 Cubic Feet? Or is it that Missouri math these people are so famous for?

1) They may be accounting for tarping and tying wood above the top of the bed. 2) They are dividing by potato.

The cubic ft. measurement is sketchy at best because the way the wood is stacked and split can make a huge difference in how much fits in a pickup truck. I have usually measured wood by dimensions instead of cubic ft. I forget now its something like 4ft wide by 4ft. high and 8ft. long....its been awhile and that may not be right. Unlike measuring something like a concrete pour to put all of something irregular shaped into a space exactly is highly unlikely, if anything you will need more space. I remember getting a cord into my old van with it dragging the ground almost.....you must have one of those smaller pickups, I thought they had 8ft. beds.5x5.5 isn't much space, yeah 3 or 4 trips sounds about right.

I think, maybe, you only counted one of the two wheel wells. I would think that an actual cord of wood would fit in 2 full bed pickup trucks. 4 x 8 x 2 = 64cu. ft. = payload on full size pickup 64 x 2 = 128 cu. ft = 1 cord. What a ya gonna do? It seems like they are really just selling it by the truckload... and that's that. best regards, mike

Wow Mike, you are right! I did forget to take off for the second wheel well. That's flippin' funny! :-) The bed capacity comes to 38.75 C/Ft after deducting for both wheel wells. I got 2 pickup loads. The first was below the top of the bed because the truck couldn't handle the weight. The second was even with the top. So I didn't even get two full truck loads. I called the guy ... he accused me of lying. He said he has the exact same truck as I do and he delivers a full cord of firewood in one trip all the time. He would have to have it stacked roughly 3 feet over the top of the cab ... it's not possible for that truck to handle that. I couldn't even get it stacked to the top of the bed, the wheel wells were about 2 inches from the tire. I'm so sick and tired of having to fight for everything. It was bad in Ia., but it seems to be much worse down here. I can't tell you how many times I've been screwed since I've been here. What makes it even worse is, this guy is one of my neighbors, about a mile away. My wife and I promised each other we won't do anything again here unless it's in writing, and we will not pay anyone a dime until the work is 100% completed. If they don't agree to those terms, c'ya'. We caved on our promise to ourselves with the last guy we hired to do some excavation work, and he screwed us. He came highly recommended, does a lot of work for Morton. He was super nice and made us feel all warm and fuzzy ... and didn't do half of what he said he was going to do. It will never happen again I can tells ya that pardners'. :-)

If I were selling a cord of wood it would be stacked up in a pile that was 128 cu.ft. and it wouldn't matter to me what you hauled it off with or how you measured your truck.

spacey If I were selling a cord of wood it would be stacked up in a pile that was 128 cu.ft. and it wouldn't matter to me what you hauled it off with or how you measured your truck. Exactly what should have happened! Problem is, I couldn't see the pile they were getting wood from because of the way they had it stacked. It was like walking through a giant maze of wood piles and they were taking it from the back of the pile. There were two guys, one was bringing it out by the arm full, the other by the wheelbarrow full. They said half a row was a cord, but I couldn't really see it. It was all covered up with blue tarps. It is good wood ... there was only 1 or 2 pieces of junk ... it's just, the owner wasn't there, his guys didn't give me enough wood, they are lying to save their own ass, he's believing them, and I'm getting screwed. And what makes this even worse ... he's an uber-holy roller. You would think someone like that would have the understanding to take a step back and think, gee, maybe my neighbor isn't lying to me and trying to screw me over and an honest mistake did happen. But no, he has to get all redneck and start yelling and accusing me of lying. Honestly, what kind of a moron claims to be able to haul a full cord of wood in a 38.75 cubic foot pickup? I want some of what he's smoking. LOL The pile the way I have it stacked is 13' x 2' x 3' = 78 C/Ft. Exactly what my truck can handle in two loads. What bugs me more about this is than me personally getting taken is, how many other people has he screwed (intentional or otherwise) that are a lot worse off than I am, ya know what I mean? Not saying I'm rich by any stretch of the imagination, but I have set myself up so I can live on the bare minimum if need be for a little while. There's a lot of folks in this area that aren't in that good of shape and it really upsets me to see someone taking advantage of people. Letting it go and moving on in 3 ... 2 ... 1 .... Ahhhhhhhh. Thanks for listening. :-)

Yeah, but even a cord of light wood like Walnut is pretty heavy. This is the exact truck I have. Same color, same rims, it's 100% identical except for that funky front bumper. I don't know what those two slots are, maybe inlets for a factory transmission cooler? Mine's not like that. I got the pic off a web site. If anyone can fit a full cord of any kind of wood in the bed of this truck, you're a better man/woman than me. Even with the top of the bed is 38.75 C/F, so imagine how high it would have to be to fit 128 C/F. :-)

Anything higher than the wheel wells and you can remove them from the equation.... so you're effectivly working with a 40cf load bed x 3 which would come to just over the roof line. A couple of load straps from the tail gate, over the load, over the roof and down to the custom slots in the front bumper fender and yer done. I guess thats what the custom slots are for...

Living on that gravel road in Iowa all those years rusted the bottom of the truck. I got a flat one time and the wire pulley system that holds the spare up underneath was rusted solid, so I had to cut it out. I keep the spare in the back seat now because the sun was dry rotting it. Doh!

craigb So cords are back in fashion? Who knew??! You just made me have a flashback that I wish I didn't have. :) When I was a kid, in the mid 70's, we were dirt poor. One time my mom went 'school clothes' shopping for me in the local 5 & Dime. She came home with 3 pair of these brown corduroy bell bottoms and these black hard healed shoes that were kind of like boots, but not. The school had wooden floors and I sounded like one of those Swedish clog dancers walking across the floor. It was mortifying, even for the 70's.

We're probably going to do that when they get natural gas out here ... right now we're stuck on propane and it's expensive. I'm on track to use $600 + a month ... in Iowa when we were on NG ... in the dead of winter, maybe it was $100 ~ $125. The other problem is, this house isn't insulated in the attic. There's only a couple inches of blow-in insulation and it's 20+ years old. Nobody has ever added more to it since the place was built. We're getting it done on Dec 19th and we're keeping our fingers crossed that it will make a dramatic improvement. We're getting R49 of the new kind of fiberglass stuff that doesn't settle and is non-allergenic.

I hear ya... My house is 27 years old, has decrepit insulation, and we have no gas in my neighborhood. I got a 100 gal propane tank. I use about 2.5 tanks a year. Just turn it on on really cold days or often for a few minutes to knock the chill off in the room. I live on a small mountaintop in TN, and it gets pretty cold here Nov-Feb. I have no attic access.. grrrr. You'll love the logs if ya get 'em. But hey- who needs heat when ya got a room full of guitars, keyboards, DAWs, speakers... LOL! Actually, my gear heats my little studio quite well!!!

Crg You can't tell if you have a full cord until you get it stacked out of the truck. The measurement is? It escapes me at the moment. Well ... a cord of wood is 128 Cubic Feet. Doesn't matter how you stack it, but most people stack it 4' deep x 4' tall x 8' long. There's a couple of common ways people stack it, but that's one of the most common. The previous owners of the house we just bought have a place set up to stack a cord directly off the back porch. I didn't fill in that space with the wood they gave me. I measured what I did get stacked and it's 3' tall x 2' deep x 13' long. That comes to 78 Cubic Feet. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out ... He said he was going to "send a couple of his guys to my house" but they never showed up. I called him back and reminded him of my address and asked if "his boys" got lost. Heh. Ya know ... if it was off by a little bit ... hell, even half a truck load, I wouldn't bust his balls ... but a full truck load and a half ... that's not right. Frickin' rednecks man. The only thing they understand is a shotgun in their face, and since I ain't the kind of person to do that, I always get screwed by these morons. He didn't even know how to figure out the Cu/Ft when I gave him the dimensions ... and this frickin' guy runs one of the largest tree cutting services in the KC area. It's unreal, absolutely unreal. LOL The owner isn't here in Mo. right now ... ya know where he is? On the East coast on a 'mission' with his church helping out from the natural disasters. And he steals from me and lies through his teeth. What a hypocrite. I wonder what his 'church' would think of this if they knew what he was doing? Ooop ... coffee's done. Gotta scoot. :-)
