Please don't laugh

I'm working with some audio tracks on X3 that I have been mixing for some time.  Tonight I tried to work on them and there is no audio.  The project loads normally.  The wave forms show up on the track view, but the meters in the console view show nothing.  Audio engine is on, nothing has been changed (that I know of) since I last worked on the project.  No solo or mute buttons on.  I'm sure there is a rediculously simple solution but I'm darned if I can figure it out.

Are your speakers on? Are the meters working?

ALways start with the simple stuff 1st. Toggle the mute button, next the solo button, check any busses,  look in preferences and see if your audio card is showing up as an option.  Grab headphones and plug em into the sound card.  If the waves  are there, the audio is still there.  Re-boot the computer.

I asked you not to laugh.  Yeah, the speakers are on.  I immediately ran another wave player through my audio device (Presonus Audiobox) and it plays fine......just not Sonar.   Like I said, the wave forms show up in the track view, but no levels showing on meters, track or console view.  Checked the project folders, all audio data looks intact and in the proper place.  These are tracks I have played dozens of times of the last few months.

Thanks Jimbo.  I immediately came up with the same list and have tried each of your suggestions.  The meters on Sonar are showing nothing.

I'm at a loss. The only thing is to try coping to a new project and see if that works. Sorry I have nothing more.

Check your solo buttons....I had a similar problem and one track was solo'ed and that mutes out everything else. If not that, I'd double check the console view for level and output settings. You may be routed to a buss that's turned down.

Yep, tried that too thinking that maybe there was a bad link to the audio data or something....no go.  Every project and the new one(s) I created to test it behave the same.  There's got to be that one little check box I'm overlooking.

Did you start the project in X3?  I opened up a couple of projects in X3 that I started in X2 and nothing plays until I bypass every effect bin, effectively disabling all my plugins.  Then it plays.  I haven't gone through all of them one at a time to find the offender but that's what's happening when I have this happen...

you mucked about with the front dial ? there is an input / output dial on it...

preferences maybe ya best bet though.. making sure it's in asio mode etc..

my interface has multi outs, but if I don't hit the other 2 on the button the asio driver won't work.. so make sure yours hasn't got something simular.. also see if there is a control panel for it by the clock on the bottom right of ya screen.

if you moved usb ports , that might be the issue.. so do a reinstall.. my micro-korg is a pain for that.

Before attempting to make adjustments within Sonar, first check that audio is working ok outside of Sonar, e.g. playback from YouTube or Media Player.  If it doesn't, get it working in Windows first before doing anything with Sonar.

I just gave a quick play around and the most obvious thing for me to get NO meters
at all is to have something soloed. I know you've checked your tracks. Have you checked
for any extra bus that is soloed? Easy to overlook.

I'm not laughing....once I had headphones on and spent a few minutes wondering why
I wasn't getting sound... checking out the routing. Then I realized the headphone amp
wasn't on..... stuff happens to all of us.

Hope you get it figured out.

So you say the audio engine icon is lit up?

And you have reinstalled your audio device right?

If you have X2 still installed, does any project play in there?

But you did say you tried other projects with the same results?

check your I/O's (inputs /outputs in your track view or console view, do you see meters moving ?
if so its got to be an I/O issue, 90% sure.

I sometimes have trouble with a particular plugin that I mainly use on the master bus. It will not let sound through it sometimes. If I disable it, sound is instantly audible. Have you tried disabling all the plugins just to make sure one of them isn't your culprit?

You could try starting the project in "Safe Mode" and just see if that solves the problem.

Try bypassing your FX - press E on computer keyboard.

Don't know if it's been suggested or not, but have you checked your main outs in Sonar? Select your master bus and look in the inspector.

    +1 ... that's a good one to check

are no meters showing anything or is it just a silent master bus (it could be as simple as having a fader down all the way which can happen e.g. with multiple CS - had that problem once that the A-PRO got stuck and kept sending MIDI messages which moved the faders that were off screen)

try another Sonar project and see if it happens there as well (if it does, it's set-up related - if not, it is project related)

could be as serious as a corrupted project (I got one at the moment that doesn't play but all meters are jumping) ...

Is another audio program active (iTunes or whatever)?  Sometimes those programs will "capture" the audio drivers and not share them with Sonar (and vice versa).

I always run Sonar without any other audio programs active.

I would create a new audio track and try to record some music on it. If you can do that and play it back (make sure you Solo it) then it would seem to be at the track level. If that's the case you would need to go track by track to find the offender. If not then I would try auditioning other projects. If they play back then you know it is only one project. If not you have some issue with your soundcard and Sonar.

Hey I just had this same problem.  It was pro channel and the concrete limiter on a master bus.

I turned the Pro Channel off and audio would go thru.  Deleted the Concrete limiter and everything was totally fine.

    Great responses guys!  In response:
-multiple projects (5) tried in X2 AND X3 same result
    -no meters moving
    -no hidden tracks
    -bypassed all plugins
    -no other audio programs running
    -reinstalled audio device
    -audio engine on

I have another audio device that I have used sparingly (a Zoom R24) but it did work well with X2.  I'm going to hook it up and see if I have the same problem.

One more question that might be important.  When I check the ASIO panel in audio preferences, under the usb tab there is no device listed.
