Please forgive me, I'm about to reveal my ignorance: NEWB ALERT

Hello folks,

Well after years of wanting a little studio of my own, I'm finally making it a reality. I've spent a fair amount of time in various recording studios, but always with other guys twisting the knobs. After doing the research, I started with an M-Audio 1010 LT, picked up a smokin' Dell workstation and loaded it with Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro and Studio Instruments. After downloading the trial, I'll be getting PE in the next week. I figure if I'm going to spend time learning the stuff, I should just start at the top.

Be warned. I'll be obsessing for a while yet, and I'm sure I'll ask a plethora of stupid questions, especially regarding MIDI work. I hope y'all won't think I'm a leech, but I really do try to refrain from offering input or opinions on stuff I don't know anything about, so if it appears that I'm not contributing, it's only because I'm still on the upside of the learning curve.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this process. Thanks for having me.

Welcome to the forum. I don't want to put you off getting SONAR but we all believe that a new release is just around the corner; like the next mointh or so. It might be worth your while waiting a little until pricing and upgrade policies are clear so that you can get the best value for your dollar. If money's no issue go get it now or ring Cakewalk and ask about offers on buying 7 now with spcial get 8 free in a month's time.

Hello Vince, the forum will make an interesting read regardless and maybe you'll find a lot of the things your interested in knowing have answers posted.

as for what Mudgel said, it's a tricky time to buy sonar as the upgrade to 8 is coming sooner than later , but one angle is sonar 7 is maturer and also Scott's power book will answer a load of things. the next version of his book isn't probably out till maybe near the end of the year.

I'm guessing when a new version is out there is loads of posts relating to it.. I guess there are a lot of simularities between v7 and 8 when it arrives.. so thats down to you..

people did ask about a free upgrade, and cake did say on here.. they aren't doing that.

Wow, great info already. I had no idea about the new version, so I'll play with GP and the 7 trial until 8 comes out. Any idea on pricing yet?

    Thanks!

    Hi Vince,
Typically the price stays the same... so if it's just a few weeks you'll basically be blowing the upgrade price (traditionally $180) for a few weeks of having access to an overwhelming number of features that will take you a long while to learn and master.

I'd stick with what you are doing... there's plenty of learning to be had and then you can transfer all your new knowledge to the latest v8 before when it comes out.

Your guitars look fabulous! The photography is very very nice.

    best regards,
    mike

Vinetto, Sonar Video archives was a good learning platform for me. There are even additional juicy clips since I was in that school. you might want to walk my path:

Hey guys, thanks for the tips. So Mike, you think I should just tool around with GT Pro for awhile? As I understand it though, GP has no midi support for instruments? Damn, I hate being such a stoopid newb.

And thanks for the compliments on the instruments. We try our best.
