Please help X1 find my audio card

I have an issue where my PC randomly shuts down (loses power) and then reboots.
I have tried a lot of things with no success so as a last resort I've disconnected my 7 year old Delta 1010 PCI card.
In the meantime I want to use my consumer onboard (ASUS P5QL-VM EPU) sound card.
Running the wave profiler X1 shows "High Definition Audio Device" with up to 48K/24 bit as OK.
In pref/driver settings under playback timing master I see the following listed:
1:
2:
3: HD audio speaker [wave RT] 1/2
4: HD audio speaker [wave RT] 3/4
5: HD audio speaker [wave RT] 5/6
6: HD audio speaker [wave RT] 7/8

Under the master channel the out shows the same but the blank 1: and 2: are listed as Bus 2 and Bus 3.
That said I get no sound when selecting any of them.
My video program, Vegas 10 (and Windows Media Player etc) has no problem using it.
Can someone tell me what I am missing please?
Thanks,
Randy

You usually need to switch to either WDM or MME driver mode to use the onboard soundcards. Do that in Preferences > Audio - Playback and Recording.

wow no kidding...even with the slider all the way to the left!
Oh well, fortunately I just have to put up with it until I can determine if the Delta 1010 is the issue.
In case it is the Delta, any $200 range sound cards anyone wants to suggest?

For $200 you are in range of a number of external devices form Lexicon, Focusrite, Personus etc.  There are also some cheap and cheerful analogue mixers with USB interfaces out there - Behringer (no flames please), and Alesis come to mind.  You might want to consider going external.

    Cheers...Grif
