Please help me configure my Midi USB keyboard controller

I have Sonar Producer Edition 8.  I have an Emu 0404 USB 2.0.  I have audio output but no output from the midi.  I can hit a key and see that it is indeed triggering a sound but no output.  I have an M Audio Keystudio.  I have used this configuration of software and equipment before so I know everything works together.  I have the input monitored, I see midi activity on the Emu but no sound.

    hi,
you say you've used this configuration before but that doesn't make sense.  the m-audio keystudio is a MIDI controller only, it doesn't have any sounds in it.  the EMU0404 does not have a softsynth in it either, so you're missing something.

in order to "hear" anything from using that midi controller you'll need to insert a softsynth in a project inside S8 and route the MIDI to that softsynth for output.

Well of course I am using a softsynth...lol  I have used this configuration of hardware to control software synths before so I know it works.  You have to at least assume that I know a little bit about what I am doing if I have used it before lol

With the risk of insulting you, some things you do not mention:

#1. Did you insert a synth and midi track together, so that synth is connected to this track?

Using a midi track by itself does not assign it to anything.

#2. Or if you want to use a soundcards gm synth you might have to assign outputs in Sonar there as well as midi track to that output.

#3. Insert the TTS-1 and see on which midi channel there is activity as a test.

Well...we only know what we read about your skills and gear, nothing more. In case we assume something, experience has taught us to assume the lesser/negative. Every week we get new people here who don't know that MIDI has no sound or who threaten to change to Pro Tools because SONAR MIDI sounds crappy.

So, unfortunately, the only way to get the message delivered is to describe in details what gear is being used and how. And describing the problem isn't as easy as one might think.

    The following, for example:
"I have audio output but no output from the midi"

is very unclear to me. You say you have audio output, but that you don't hear anything!?.
Does it mean you can hear audio tracks in general, in playback and monitoring? OK. But then, what does the "output from MIDI" mean, then? To where should the MIDI be put out? Maybe it means you can not trigger audio with your MIDI, sounds logical, but what is creating the audio?
You leave so much for me to guess, that I don't feel like starting to compose an answer.

    Or

"I can hit a key and see that it is indeed triggering a sound but no output."

Where can you see it triggering a sound, or do you only see MIDI activity inside SONAR (not only in EMU)? We can't assume it's in the soft synths GUI because we don't know about any soft synth being used, and having just read that you have "no output from the MIDI" .

Please, don't feel offended by this, I'm just trying to tell how it looks like from the point of view of the person who's trying to answer the questions.

Unfortunately I can't give you my suggestion for a solution, because I really don't know what the set up is. Which soft synth is inserted/set up how, with inputs/outputs from where/to etc.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.
