Please help me connect the last dots on this mix.
Hi, haven't been around for a while. I have endured quite a few computer hiccups during the making of this tune... It's almost there, but not quite... Please have a listen & let me know what it needs. It's called "Disconnected" & you can find it here: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8011585

I can't think of a thing that would improve the mix... I like it just like it is... Very well done...

Good work. Really love the change up at 1:20. Musically, impressive work!! In my opinion, the vocals are too up front and maybe too boomy. They aren't quite meshing with everything else. But what do I know?

But what do I know? Thanks for giving it a listen... The vocals - yeah, I'm trying to find the balance between an up-front, pop-ish sound with excellent lyrical intelligibility & a loud rock tune. I have high-pass filtered them quite aggressively, but perhaps I should add a little more reverb to settle them back into the mix a bit?

Hey man...nice job! I can't really hear much I'd do different. Maybe the rhythm gits sound a touch too thick, but that may depend on what you listen on. Reminds me of a cross 'tween Black Crowes and...someone else.

Wonderful work. Great song, great vibe, great sound for the most part. Its perhaps not quite as bright as i prefer. Sounds like you cut too much from the highs and mid highs. A small amount of sparkle would top this off I think. Cheers Shad

When it is just the riff, the bass notes seems to be in the same space as the guitar line. I would drop down the bass an octave, or add some sub-sine bass to compensate for it. Or just draw some envelopes and do a highpass on the guitars at that point to draw the bass more. Guitars are too loud in relation to everything else. I would add a half db on the drum track and slightly eq it, as it comes across a bit thin. Vocals are (no pun intended) disconnected from the sound of the music. And the guitars are stepping all over them as well. I would draw an envelope when you sing on the guitars to damp down around 1k to leave some room for the vocals. And get thee some reverb! That being said, great tune, and even better performance.

Knocked me off me chair...wife thinks I'm drunk...whoa. Punchy tight mix to my ears. Very nice. Is that a real drummer? Fantastic either way. I'm no one to crit a mix ...this is just really good stuff.

I'm a bit confused though - On the one hand, some have said the vocals are too up front, but you appear to be suggesting that they're being overwhelmed by the guitars...? Let me assure you, there definitely is reverb happening in this mix, & I had more on my first mix, but I that because it is a busy track, it tended to take away from the punchiness of the song.

The vocals are indeed upfront... I was saying that the sound of the vocals seem disconnected from the overall groove of the tune. And the guitars are indeed overwhelming, but their volume has nothing to do with the freq overlaps that are happening with the vox.

Due to my respect for James opinion, I took a second listen to this because I did not hear what he heard at all. Then I recalled that James listens on headphones a lot, so I threw on the cans. Indeed there are minor issues that can be cleaned up that become more apparent with headphones on. The problem is if you correct it for that, you may end up breaking it for loud speakers. You will want to make small small adjustments to things. I do not agree the vox are disconnected from the mix though. They are stellar both through the monitors and cans. Love em, sound suits the style perfectly. The one or two minor tweaks needed to clean up the middle freqs will lend some added clarity to the vox.

Shad: I heard this on my monitors, not the phones. As for the vox disconnect: that is a YMMV kind of opinion. I think it is a stylistic question; the technical answer to how to change it (if so desired) is another story!
